Steven Pienaar is on his way back to Merseyside after South Africa were knocked out at the group stage of the African Cup of Nations.
Bafana Bafana needed to secure an impressive win over Senegal in their final match in Group D and rely on a positive result for either side in the other group game between Angola and Tunisia.
But Carlos Alberto Perreira's South Africa could not produce the required result, ensuring Pienaar's involvement in the Ghana-based tournament is at an end. The Blues' midfielder, on loan from German side Borussia Dortmund, did not figure in South Africa's final match.
He is now set to return to England and re-join David Moyes' Everton squad, although he is unlikely to feature for Saturday's Premier League encounter with Blackburn at Ewood Park.
South Africa took the lead in their game against Senegal, netting early in the opening period courtesy of a volley from Elrio van Heerden, who plays for Belgium's Club Brugge.
Senegal pulled back an equaliser eight minutes before the break, with West Ham's Henri Camara netting.
But had South Africa secured the win they craved, Angola's stalemate with Tunisia meant they would have been unable to progress to the last eight.
