Been in Barrow for 35 years and it’s always been an easy target for a “end of a cul de sac” jibe. It is what it is, a small Victorian shipyard town out on a limb and never pretended to be anything else. I have always felt ok here, made friends, settled and brought up two kids. Like many small towns, the town centre has suffered and there is a lot of full of boarded up shops. That's online shopping for you. All the major retailers have moved out but there are signs of better times ahead. Employment prospects are good and hopefully the town is on the up. Yes, There are social issues but no different to anywhere else.
To the person who is moving here for work, go for it, its a decent quality of life, schools good, housing affordable, Heart of the Lake District within 45mins if that’s your thing, but don't expect the cultural/ theatre/concert and choices you would get in major city or an affluent suburb in the South East. It can also get quite windy!
For your footy fix, get down to Holker Street and follow the Bluebirds!
