Alio

They call me Avocado Baby
Never really thought of this before, but noticed how brilliantly excited Desailly was getting over the Ghana win. Would he do the same for France?

Does Townsend support England?

Does that fella who played for Jamaica in the last World Cup still support them, bearing in mind there was no way he was from Jamaica....

I'd find that odd to the mcmax

Zidane was a very interested spectator at the Algeria match.

Im sure his parents are Algerian.

I stand by foreigners in the national teams in very special circumstances.

Desailly went as a kid to France and lived there through his childhood. He made himself a footballer over there, so I think it's not a criticizable one.

Looking at the Portuguese example, 3 brazilians and 2 cape verdian (one out). The 2 cape verdians are in the same situation as Desailly. The brazilians came to the country to play professional football... they should never be in portuguese national team.

The ridiculous is that Deco gave interviews stating he feels brazilian through and through. Only Pepe still says that he owes everything to this country and that he feels more portuguese than brazilian.

This way, national teams will be pointless. They shall starting prospecting like Arsenal does and then making them nationals to play for the Selecção.

They are indeed.

But he was born and raised in France.

I don't know how you english deal with emigration. But I have contact with a lot of portuguese emigrants who went mainly to France. Their kids were born in France but still feel like they were born in Portugal. Of course some won't. But it's understandable either way.

Saw Zidane taking a big look at Algeria, just never noticed it before from an ex player, taking interest in another country

Think his dad may have played for Algeria too

Jack Charlton famously celebrated when he managed Ireland and they scored against England. He's a hero over there Big Jack.

Alan Hansen is definatly an England fan too.

Its not much of a stretch to identify with two countries at once. I've got loads of mates who support England at football and, not that they care that much, India at cricket.

People like Desailly, Zidane and many others are products of two countries, so will support both those countries. There's definitely a cynical element as well. Players who aren't good enough for the better country go and play for the weaker one (witness 17 French born players in Algeria's squad) whilst the Zidane's make sure they play for the better team (witness Benzema turning down Algeria only to get dropped by France).

Ghana vs Germany could feature two brothers (Jerome and Kevin Prince Boateng) playing international football for opposing teams. I'm not sure that's ever happened before.

rugby is worse, some have represented 1 at league and another at union.

henry paul playing league for nz and union for England, as has 'the volcano.'

I think inga the winger played for all blacks and then samoa at league.

Stuart mcall famously went to warm up at the far end of wembley so as to not be brought on for England, and then chose to play for scotland.

Don't tell Ghost that anyone - if you don't support England and only England after being born here your a bad bad man

Desailly is just a bad bandwagon jumper no doubt according to ghost.

Oh definatly, he should only be cheering for France the bad tent.

Him cheering for Ghana, well makes winning World Cup 98 and Euro 2000 a complete waste, he shouldn't have bothered if after all that he was going to go crazy for Ghana
