Got quite an easy essay due in next week on;

‘Prisons are unique institutions in that the involve locking up citizens, sometimes for lengthy periods, against their will. Severe limitations are placed on their freedom, on what they can and cannot do’ (Coyle 2005)
Essay Title: Consider how recent changes in the prison population have affected the running of prisons in Britain.

Now theres some brains on here so thought would seek feedback/advice on here before I begin. What kind of things do you think would be important/key/interesting to include?

the revolving door policy of the penal system and that prisoners are kept in a higher standard of living than some pensioners and children.

but it sounds like the 'human rights' fiasco that you are being asked to address.

It seems to me a more practical question than a political one. Two issues that spring immediately to mind are gender and religion.

There was a mixed prison opened up recently in Peterborough http://www.guardian.co.uk/gender/story/0,11812,1434315,00.html

You could discuss that.

Or you could study religion. Since 1993, the number of Muslims in British prisons has risen threefold, from 2,106 in March 1993 to 6,136 in June 2003.

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs/hosb1501.pdf is the census of religion in prisons. That could make an interesting study.
