Just going to post this and leave it up to your good selves.

Have had a period of not the best health this year, all on the mend now thankfully. After an unrelated operation ,while in the recovery ward the surgeons came around and the info was, it had gone well, but there was a concern the Prostate was hard. They were going to send bloods away and do a biopsy.
Lids, I'm fifty four and the last thing I'd ever would have done was go and get a Prostate check. Well I've spent five weeks fretting about this, worrying the family sick and gone through a bit of a journey . Was in today and the Surgeon said she was just going to check the prostate before the biopsy op as the blood results were clear. turns out everything was the finest so no biopsy needed.

I'm only posting this, just to let the men know on the website, when your at the age, go get it checked. It doesn't hurt , seriously , if anything, it's uncomfortable for 10 seconds ,if that.
Actually, the Nurse taking the line out my arm caused more pain, don't go through my experience of the last month , there's so little to worry about.Get it checked.

Good to hear you're ok.
I am very much of the opinion that if it ain't broke then don't mess with it.
In recent years emphasis on prostate cancer in men has risen to the top. I have read a great deal about the symptoms and things to look out for, and I am comforted by the fact that other than being in the most at risk age range, I don't exhibit anything that would suggest I have prostate issues.
The funny thing is that as we know there is no national screening programme for this, unlike cervical and breast cancer for women. This is grossly unfair. I have heard of many cases of blokes ringing their GP to ask for a test, only to be told by those harridans that are the doctors receptionists, to self diagnose and if concerns are there, then go to A&E.

This is exactly what happened to me when I rang up.

My missus is a nurse and she said the screening programme varies from Health Trust to Health Trust - it`s all about the money, money ....

Have you got details of the website mate ?

Quite. I went to my doc, who to be fair has been very good over the years, and mentioned that occasionally my urine stream was stifled, and at the time I was experiencing unusual abdominal pain in that area.
He was surprisingly quite reluctant to do a prostate exam and put it down to being a bit of a bug. He may have been right, and since then its cleared up.

Part of me though wonders if he was really reluctant to poke his finger up my fundament, or whether it was down to cost.

100% cost.

I was under the impression that it was part of a National screening drive, apparently not.

You would think that prevention really would be better than cure, because the survival rates are non existent.

One of my mates died from it, age 41 from it, another older bloke I used to drink with, was dead 6 weeks after diagnosis.

I suspect every fella over the age of 50 knows someone who`s died from it.

The biopsy is not a pleasant thing. Good to get the condition checked early though. Also do the bowel screening test every two years. It can be a life saver.

My dad also had a prostate health scare earlier in the year. Getting over the psychological mountain of having it checked was tough. Thankfully he was also just fine in the end.
It can be a really stressful couple weeks but absolutely true that its worth checking.

...F-i-L was diagnosed some 15 years ago but he’s still plodding on at 86. He’s as hard as nails and has just had a course of chemo (against the Consultants advice). Treatment is therapeutic but he still has quality of life. Amazing man.

Sensible post the best story is the garage owner urged his men to have the test all negative gladly - Refused to go untill pushed by his men and he proved to be positive caught in time with no symptoms - he now bangs the drum for all middle age men to go to their GP and gave the simple test by the way your were lucky getting a female lol

I was under the assumption it was a simple blood test PSA or something
I was under the illusion that the days of the rubber glove were gone.
We get a bi annual health screening in work but I go every 6 months to my doc for check up and bloods.
Here we pay for doctors visits 60 Euro and for prescriptions
I’m on Nexium and a statist for cholesterol and it’s 45 Euro a month
Blood tests are free in the hospital.
I think it’s vital that men drop the bravado and go and get regular check ups.
Lad in work was nagged for months by his missus to go to doc
Went got checked and 2 weeks later had 4 stents put in
Surgeon told him he was a heart attack waiting to happen
He’s only 57

My father had an aortic aneurysm some years back. I am one of three sons and we were all advised by a doctor at the Royal to visit our GP to get checked out. My brother who was in the RN at the time got checked immediately. I visited my GP and got told that I have no cause for concern (without any checks). Basically I was fobbed off. Yet men are often accused of neglecting their health.
