Berezofsky is about as guilty of fraud as Mikhail Khodorkovsky was. All he's guilty of his not towing the line with Putin. That whole affair was akin to Labour saying Lord Browne was a fraudster, nationalising BP and sending him off to Guantanimo Bay.

As for our reliance on Russia it's not as much as it was due to the opening of the gas pipeline from Norway but with the North Sea reserves dwindling, and incentives to explore for more vanishing under the weight of Brown's tax grab on the industry, we can't be complacent. BP have already fallen foul of Putin's resource grabbing ways at Sakhalin Island and with so much oil in the hands of dodgy governments it pays to have options.
