with the ecomonic crisis you will find a rise in cases like this.

with the 1930's great depression , nationalism and far right thinking spread throughout the world.

im sure it will again if things continue to slide.(sorry to say but it will get worse before its gets better)

im expecting a 'look after your own first' mentallity to spread within the next couple of years, even amongst the most tolerant of society.

Agreed. Remember the rise of the national front in the mid 70's / early 80's. When people start to fear for their jobs they start to listen to anyone offering blame/confort rather than solutions. I would hope we can learn from the past and disregard them, but I won't hold my breath.

Agreed. The hatred stirred up in times of economic recession is awesome. Seige mentality, look after our own, get rid of Johnny foreigner - all these will surface in due course and so many people will just nod in agreement.
Daily Mail headlines will be interesting.

I think we don't generally see this in Canada - at least not to the same degree as elsewhere - and I have a theory on this. Canadians generally like to blame the USA for anything that we can, and this is certainly one where we can do that. So with our giant neighbour to the south as a convenient scapegoat, the more vulnerable targets in our society are at least a little less on the radar of those who must blame someone.

As much as I love Canada, this king-sized complex we seem to have about America and Americans is puerile. But in this case, if I'm right and it in any way acts as a bulwark against anti-minority prejudice diuirng these economic times, perhaps that's the silver lining.

How democratic is the democracy we have now?

How many times do we need to see capitalism lead to getting stabbed in the back before we appreciate some of the positives of nationalism that mean at least you get stabbed in the front. (thought meanderings, try not to let a taste for something get you frenzied!)
