Realistic 22/23 expectations

we nearly got relegated last season, and in all honesty, fully deserved it if it happened.

We need to temper our expectations. This season is all about building something for the future. That being said, our goal, technically, is don't get relegated and get one more year through our dreadful signings of seasons past

Next year, after another summer of signings, is when we can realistically aim for higher

I agree, we were utter terd last year and would have fully deserved relegation. The whole season felt like relegation was going to be our destiny. Toxic atmosphere, ultra crap negative management that was kept on for far too long, an injury list from hell, player peedo scandals etc etc.

We simply cannot be setting last season’s mega disaster as a target for this season. We are not Forest… our wage bill is still probably top 10, we still have star names throughout our squad. Our target should be significantly higher than 40 points, which probably makes you the 5th crappest side in the league.

Who do you think we are currently? What level do you actually think we’re at? Because I’ve got some news to break to you unfortunately.

I think we are considerably better than last year’s disaster that managed 39 points. I don’t think we are the 5th crappest side in the league. I think we can compete with anyone below the top six, and that we should be aiming to finish in the top half.

I'm kinda ok with that, as long as top half doesn't somehow becone a bare minimum in people's heads, and getting into the top half then starts people expecting top 6, and then getting all ratty if we fall short. Comfortably safe from relegation is a minimum, somewhere in, or close to, top half is an aim. If we were lucky enough to get beyond that, I'd be extremely pleased, but would acknowledge that there was luck involved.

I think we can aim for 7th to 10th, we have to maintain that Goodison will bring in another 10 wins and hope our away form which has been improved.

The World Cup will allow a lot of clubs to reset and regroup so January Transfer Window will be interesting but I don't see us spending huge only really moving bit part players on like Keane, Mina or Doucoure.

If we could improve our attack, it would be a bonus but prices and fees will be through the roof.
7th?

City, arsenal, Liverpool, United, Chelsea, spurs, in whatever order, then us? Unlikely I think. Would be an excellent season.

Maybe this is semantics, but I guess my point is that it's next season when we can start to realistically have some sort of expectations again. I honestly don't care about where we finish this season. It's irrelevant. We just need to stay up

Next season I want to be finishing no lower than 10th with glimpses of much more

I've got ultra-realist in my dotage the games against the top clubs I expect nothing in the hope of being pleasantly surprised on occasion. From what I've seen we're beyond a relegation scrap AND one of the better sides in the lesser part of the division. Good news in my book giving me hope for an 8thish finish.

Definitely need to avoid relegation. but we have the cord of a good side and need to show progress to keep it together.

I think we need somewhere between 13th - 9th.

With what happened in the last 3 games, albeit against decent opposition, I don't expect too much as others have said but yesterday shows what we can do
when we're on song. There are other teams in and around us that might have the same outlook. Look at Villa today. We're improving we're a work in progress
but there are limitations. Repeat yesterday a number of times we might be able to count on the players to chip in with the goals.

8-12th is great.

Developing 2 x more Gordon-esque youth players would be even better than a cup run for me. Somewhere on this forum I read we need to get through 1 more season in order to purge the remaining toxic add-ons in our squad. That is a great point. Shedding the last of that detritus with a few talented young guns chomping at the bit for Lampard bumps us closer to top half in my opinion.

Another factor is that sport everywhere is struggling post covid. We're one of the best supported clubs with some money behind us and a new stadium going up in the toughest of times. It's easy to overlook the challenges facing Wolves, Leeds, Bournemouth, Saints, Fulham, Villa, , Leicester etc cash-wise - all with lesser attendance and backing than EFC. Palace, Forest, Brentford etc have good mgt but results ebb and flow there, too.

I was surprised at how much business we did in the summer... Made me think that the penny has finally dropped at EFC board in terms of the damage and manner of the overseas splurge of the last 6-7 years.

Got a nice little run pre World Cup, then we have to start again and push on through the 2nd 'big half' of the season, when the top 6 will tired owing to WC.

Crazy season. We'll be fine.

People need to be realistic about where the club is. We need to steer clear of relegation, continue to rebuild the squad with the right profile of player, hopefully the club can be sold to a next level investor with a track record in running successfull sports teams and then we can kick on in the new stadium

If you’re Nottingham Forest perhaps. Not Everton.

Honestly, one ultra crap season and people are setting 40 point targets, a replica of last season more or less.

A replica of last season would be an unmitigated disaster and completely unacceptable, it is not the aim of Everton to repeat last season.

On Saturday they did in 90 minutes against the RS what we've failed to do in 12 years...
