Player Valuation: £50m
midfield three,

........neville...carsley.......
.............osman...............

i can see the reasoning, lock it down, and feed the ball to osman to distribute.

(sounds [Poor language removed] great in theory - but so does communism)

when all else fails utilise yakubu to hump balls too and hope for a knock down here and there so aj and fads can pick up the second ball

(sounds [Poor language removed] great in theory - but so does peace and love)

hindsight is great and im going to struggle to really stick the knife into moyes, maybe tonight was a bad day at the office but if we cant take some second rate side to the cleaners then we dont belong in europe and we dont deserve the brilliant and committed support this club has banked on for decades.

Mmmmm..... I'll go with the "bad day at office" option.

That and no Cahill, Gravesen, or Arteta. Anyone of those three (and admittedly, I'm stretching it a bit with Gravesen) could have made a difference tonight.

I know, I know. It's bad that Everton have to rely on one or two players to make the whole team go but that's how it is. Rather, we ought to be grateful that we've got those one or two players on our roster.

Lots of emotion tonight but we're still in it. Let's not bury Moyes and the players just yet.

tonight i wouldve prefered an injured arteta over osman, a drunk van der meyde over neville, and pienaar instead of carlsey. Maybe then we wouldve passed a bit better, our midfield was woeful, and osman didnt even stay in position

mate thats not one or two players thats are midfield!!!

I am sick to the back teeth of saying it now but Carsley and Neville should not play together in the centre of midfield.

I've said that since before the start of the season. Can't believe Moyes continues to play with those two defensive midfielders together all the time against weaker opponents. We need to have an offensive minded in the centre as well.

Who else did we have though? I presume Pienaar was injured so that's him out. VDM is unlikely to play for us again so he's not an option. Jagielka could have come in, and probably should have been, but even he isn't a creative midfielder.

We don't have the strongest midfield in the first place but take out three or four of our first choice and it really isn't very good and Metalist outplayed us in midfield last night.

Obviously a bit down after last night, but the majority in the ground could see the 3 wasnt working in the first half Bruce, ok we where one up but we had been swamped at times. Its not as if DM had to replace anyone but rather go 4 4 2.I`ve got to mention the Johnson,McFadden,Yakubu from yesterdays posts also,if Moyes feels he had to please all three there is something wrong there.Sticking McFadden out wider is not the answer if your going to play him then play him up front.
Although AJ/Yak did well dropping back sometimes further than our midfield to pick the ball up they seem to play to far apart that needs working on.

I think you've answered your own question there. To play a four in midfield would have meant either bringing on another defensive midfielder (Jags), moving McFadden to the wing (as you said not ideal) or playing Vidarsson (very raw). I don't see 4-3-3 as a long term strategy for the team but born more out of neccessity.

Yep have to hold may hand up there, but as you`ve said `neccessity`, he could have changed it to a 4 in mid.Dont get me wrong tho` I applauded his 3 up front pre kick off i thought yes get at them but then.......
Myself I may have gone with pushing Neville to rb, and Jags in the midfield who I think is less static than PN (have to say I think Neville is a very poor footballer) I still believed the formation should have been changed by doing exactly what we shouldnt,by putting in a four and Faddy out on the wing, you just cant win can you!!!!
Mention for Wessels, the save in the first half was top drawer.

Agreed, Carslet wasn't in the game, and I wish Phil wasn't as all he seemed to do was loose the ball...

i thought 433 was a good formation for the game.
but the player selection was wrong and the players just were not available to put a decent team out in 433 imo.
move neville to right back ? that would only leave jags who could slot into the middle.
ie
...........wessels
neville yobo lescott baines
....jags........carsley
..........osman
mcfadden aj ...yakubu

with the right back swap perhaps this would make the difference between 1-1 and a 1-0 win ? but it doesnt add any more chance of better attacking play.
the change of nev to jags in the middle is very like for like so i cant see us doing much better attack wise here.

perhaps a 424 would have worked

............wessels
neville yobo lescott baines
..........jags carsley
aj....anichebe yakubu mcfadden

i cant actually cant see a problem with this line up.aj is out of place but the passes he currently gets are all away from goal into the corners anyway so i dont see how this position changes his game at all .

looking at the team selection for last night , the proplems are glaring out at me with this squad .

1.we havent got enough quality performances in other midfeild positions to allow neville/jags and carsley to play in the middle.
2.jags neville and carsley are all too similar , 1 has got to go.
3.hibbert jags and neville are all too similar , 1 has got to go.
4. gravesen and arteta should play centre midfeild until cahill is back.
5.the performances ,supply and all round cover from the wide midfeild players is a load of junk (apart from arteta).
6. the midfeild is a headache all round .

what players have earnt there place in the team imo this season?
yobo , lescott , baines , arteta and also aj.he hasnt scored but the effort has been tireless.

the rest of the team just havent commanded a first team place.
some have been good but not consistantly good enough.

gk , rb , 3 x midfeild positions and a 2nd striker are all up for grabs.

Nightbreed, do you think the reason AJ gets the passes down the line is because he shows himself that way? Personally I would rather see him making runs through the middle. Use his pace, because the only real benefit we get from these running the channels is a goal once in a blue moon, but generally we just win a throw. Which cue Neville to attempt a long throw.

Why oh why are we over reliant on set pieces. The ball comes into AJ, and now Yakubu and we go down looking for free kicks. Same with Arteta. I would like to see us play a bit more. We must be doing that in training, I refuse to believe the manager is training the players for set pieces.
