Red Cards

I am obviously not up to speed on how bans are defined. Over the weekend, Alan Smith recieved a straight red for complaining about the Manure's 6th goal. As far as I can see (and I have done some looking) it doesn't appear to be a second yellow, just a straight red.

I know that for 2 yellows it is a 1-game ban, and a straight red is 3 games (such as Arteta's Fabregas induced absence).

So, HOW THE HELL does Smith only get a 2-games ban for a straight red? Is it because he is a little snide and the ref had enough (ie it wasn't the result of a nasty tackle)???????

A Player who is dismissed from the Field of Play for using offensive or
insulting or abusive language/gestures, whether he has previously been
cautioned in the match or not, will be suspended automatically from all
approved First Team matches commencing forthwith, and until such time as
his Club’s First Team has completed its next two matches in approved
Competitions.

So, even though Arteta's red card appeared to been justified (think of from the ref's perspective) but proven to be nothing more than the result of play-acting, the simulator get's off free and the real victim has a 3 match ban.

I do so hate the FA.

Sucks doesn't it. Seems the way of the world though. As a kid I had something of a short fuse and the PE teacher would often tell people to wind me up as some kind of psychological experiment, see how long before one of them got kicked in the head.
