Rescuing data from a HD? Tech nerd wanted.

My wife's computer broke a few months ago. We tried to get it repaired but the guy couldn't do it (some self-employed type). Basically, you could switch it on, and it seemed to fire up. However, there was no picture on the screen. It was completely black.

Anyway, I would like to see if I can rescue the data from the HD, and transfer it to her new computer. I know this might not be possible if the HD is damaged. But I know it should be possible if it isn't.

Exactly what is it that I need? I read somewhere that it's something called a USB universal drive adapter, and I simply take the HD from the old computer and hook it up to the new one, and then Bob's your uncle.

Is that right? You see I looked on ebay, and there were just 2 results in a search for that. But you got more results if you left out either "universal" or "drive", if you understand what I mean.

I would be really grateful if one of you brainy, techy types could post a link on ebay UK or even US of the type of thing I want (cheap job hopefully), or maybe just explain in very simple terms exactly what I should buy. It needs to be posted to mainland Europe so ebay is best for that. Plus, I can use paypal.

Appreciate any help.

Right machine as in the USB thingy-mabob?

That's it, the thingy-mabob.

Saw on number 1 that you might be able to do it without one but it looked complicated. I'm crap at tech stuff. The second version looked almost idiot-proof, which is where I come in.

Hmmm. Both seem very complicated. I thought it would be a case of buying an external hard drive, copying it all on to that, then plugging it in to the new computer, copying and pasting everything, and away you go....maybe not.

I'll get there mate - eventually

lol. Cheers Azz. I'm dead thick when it comes to computers. But the wife makes me paranoid as well. Touch her computer and she starts accusing you of breaking it.

Now's your chance to get in her good books!

Im no good with them either, failed all my ECDL modules a few years ago! :|

I don't even know what an ECDL is, so I guess that makes you considerably better than me.

We are all equal my friend ;)

Some people, a la moi, are just far superior.

I think it stands for European Computer Driving License!

Mate, why did you put an exclamation mark after Orrell Park as your location.

I always found Orrell Park quite ordinairy, I like it there like.

Have you stated whether you like pineapple on pizza yet either?
