Been thinking about this recently, rivals exist across different sports, and what you may think about a team or country doesn't exist in different sports and levels.

For example:

The Ashes, when we look at Shane Warne in the past and now Ricky Ponting, they are bitter rivals (to an England fan).

But do we see Tim Cahill as Australian? He is, but outside of football he would be supporting the Aussies in the cricket. But we don't see him as a rival.

So what do we feel about Rivals? Why does it exist? Does it go back to tribal existence? We all know that England v Germany goes back to the War, but it may actually go back further than that.

Our rival with Liverpool, how far back does that go? When did it turn nasty?

Is it all closely related with gang warfare? Is it all about territory?

Whatever it is, for me rivalry is the reason sport exists, in my opinion.

To me , yes , for the duration of the Ashes , Timmy is indeed the Enemy . As is McB , Bund's , S.D'sGringo , etc . I've said as much to him .He's a masive Aussie cricket fan .
However , Gerrard wil always be the enemy . EVEN when he represents England .
Dalglish ( Homosexual !!! ) , the same .
It got nasty post Euro ban . We were shabs by then . Thatcher's Tories did an about turn on the R.S. ban , Sky came in . Locals started to drift away . In came the Wools .
E.g. I went to the Judas Barmby derby . Sat in the Rd. End . Their part . We scored . I jumped up . It went off . Initiated , I may add , by 3 Irish , and 4 Welsh KNOBS , who just assumed thats what we did .
It's symptomatic . No one now admits to , going the match together . Red scarves out of 1 car window . Blue out of the other .
There's no going back now .
Rivals , ...it's a goddamn fact .

i think a big part of that rivalry is that the ashes is a famous competition, no such competition exists between the england and australia national football teams, so i guess the football based rivalry never developed to that same extent.

Chester was welsh, hence most of the surrounding area remains welsh

Well American was Indian till the western world went over there. It's called Imperialism.

We let you have Welsh words on your road signs what else do you want? Leeks on them? Some big bearded fella singing the national anthem.

Oh and remember to never venture into the walls after nightfall. :)

They can shoot at us with a crossbow. We can shoot back with a longbow. The law still stands although i wouldn't fancy my chances in court

The Rivals - a play by Sheridan. I remember reading it at school about 30 odd years ago.

I'm not really interested in any "rivalry" with someone just because of what country they come from or what team they support.

Light hearted joking yeah but i never take it any further than that.
