Roberto Martinez discussion

I cannot see how he can turn this around all of a sudden. For the last 18 months, Everton is struggling to win games even at home. Yes the attacking play is smoother but the defence is getting worse so it cancels each other out.

Yes, it does. But the single most important piece of restoring the balance is easy(ish) to solve. The second is close to fitness.

Will he? Where do you get your confidence?

1. He has done it before.

2. It is relatively easy to do.

3. If he doesnt, he will maybe looking for a new job.

I needed to raise a few bob job wise cos mine was rubbish, so deliver 80 odd parcels a day. 6 days a week.

Needs must.

I know.

But although we have lost games, other than one, we havnt been beaten.

Semantics perhaps, but that is how I see things. Bloody frustrating, weekends ruined, but I can see what he is trying to do. And if he can get that last 10% right, (ironically the easiest bit), good times.

And if he doesnt, he will be toast.

I like these kinds posts because although I think Martinez is a) positive guy b) made decent signings c) plays attractive football ultimately I think he'll be tactically too flawed for a top team. At least not without a shift in his defensive thinking.

So I read this post, and others like Davek hullefc etc, and think... "ok, what am I missing?". I love the moments of attacking verve, but not the declining concentration, defensive discipline or work rate?

So for you is it as simple as jags back, or a decent acquisition, defensive coach?

Rather than RM move on i'd love to see him develop and improve this hole in his game. it's what I greatly appreciate about Everton, commitment to developing guys.

Could we have Ratcliffe, Unsworth or someone with the fans trust to help. If we truly are rebuilding the back line it'll need a coupla seasons, but can RM do it alone? I'd feel more comfortable if there were a credible Evertonian helping wrestle through this one.

When he stands there arms folded blaming refs, that's a bad sign.

Not for one minute do I think we would go down, The bottom 4 are utterly pish

Just be interesting what the board would do if we droppEd to 15th

Yeah, its bad times that talk of there being worse sides in the prem is back on topic for Everton, with this squad that kind of debate should be well in the past, it was a serious concern under Walter and the squad we had then, right now we have the leading striker in the league and are nothing better than a mid table side.

Maybe all 3. Dunno. All I do know is solving a problem of the team defending, seemingly mainly at home apparently now, is a damn sight easier than solving the problem of a team not scoring or creating chances.

The Moyes/Martinez clone shout is not a bad idea!

He is also, apparently, stubborn as a mule, which can be a good thing in management, but he is also no fool.

New keeper, Jags back, will be a big step in the right direction.

And if we could all stop walking under ladders and vollying black cats, that might help as well.

McCarthy fit will help too.

Three very good points you have brought up there. I've noticed we are bring a new 'fitness' bloke in Doctor someone or other. From what I've read we have been on the look out for a while now, since the summer I think. He works on things like stamina/fitness and other things.

Maybe the concentration can be put down to inexperience or getting tired. The doctor may sort out the stamina issue that can improve the concentration. As can using subs.

Defensive discipline. Again, experience plays a part imo. But also a change in formation/tact. I've waffled and blah balh blahhed enough about changing to a 4-3-3 as we did against Chelsea. That said it does not absolve the defending at 4 corners, Dann, Ings, West Brom and Norwich that led to goals. Work needs to be done. Baines and Mori have both said they are working on it.

I think the players are annoyed and it shows they care to get it right. Martinez is no fool. He changed things last season with the attacking side of our game and it improved. I believe he, the coaches and the players will sort out the defensive side of our game.

In the bottom half and sliding my friend
