Laughable. Truly laughable.

Keeper Paul Robinson retires from England duty

Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson has pulled out of the England squad for Wednesday's friendly with Hungary and retired from international football.
The 30-year-old played at the 2006 World Cup but had drifted off the scene until his recall for this game.
"Only now have I been able to make this decision as previously I haven't been in contention for selection," he said.
"I don't see myself as a number three or four keeper and find that role very frustrating."
The former Leeds and Tottenham goalkeeper made his England debut in 2003 against Australia and won 41 caps, including playing in all five of England's games at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Instead of retiring and not giving himself a chance to be selected, he waits to get selected and then retires.

Fecking drama queen.

Like it or not, International football is an honour and generally speaking means you are highly rated. Paul Robinson, like Paul Scholes and Jamie Carragher have basically said "I don't think I am good enough".

Surely if you are at any level at any football club or team, you are there to stand up and be counted and say - I am the No.1 for that position. If I was a Blackburn fan I wouldn't be massively confident in having a player in the sticks who questions his own ability.

Completely agree. Although Scholes didn't go for family reasons, I think. No one was doubting his ability.

He does right IMO. Robinson, for me, is still the best England keeper we've got...his international record proves it. So the fact that Capello is oooh-ing and Arrr-ing over his keeper, and has been since he took over - Green, James, Hart, Foster - 2 of which (Foster and Hart) still need a few seasons worth of games to be trust worthy enough in goal at international. As we all know, 1 cock up and your international career is over. And I dont rate Ben Foster at all.

Robinson's just seen it as a last throw of the dice call up to be fair. Was never even considered until the piss poor performance in the World Cup. Now he's given another shot even though last season he preformed better than Rob Green and David James did all season.

And dont get me started on giving Kieran Gibbs a call up...has done nothing to warrent a call up. And Capello clearly feels now Baines is shiote.

Well he said it was so he can concentrate on United, but it's such a cop out answer.

Well if he was (and is) good enough for a team as good as United, I don't think he'd doubt himself for England. England are a steaming pile of [Poor language removed].

Is this the same sort of "retirement" we saw from Carragher? Where he couldn't bother his boll0cks playing friendlies or qualifiers, but waltzed himself back into the team as soon as a major competition came around?

I dont think he'd do that.

End of the day, he preformed better than Green and James last season, and has a better international record than Green and Hart, and was over looked. He's probably doesnt want to play 2nd fiddle behind 2 young keepers who still have a lot to learn.

That is the way I read it Col.

The old "I deserve to be number 1 choice and do not see why I have to prove myself and fight for my place in a friendly" type of attitude.

Don't blame him meself, why should he waste time playing for England? Club football is much better nowadays and more important than international soccer

Sounds pathetic but then again you can understand it. It would have been even more laughable if he'd said something without a call up.
