Ronald Koeman discussion

I know its no nonsense that we've been waiting for for ages, but he can't reasonably keep hanging players out to dry with minimal pressing from the reporters asking him the questions. Kev probably was being a massive bell but if Koeman keeps using his brute force for every situation are we going to have a problem with recruitment / the dressing room?

Bring in quality striker and CB (and dare I say keep hold of Barkley) and I do feel we have a really good squad available with lots of depth and options once everyone is fit. It's then a case of picking the right players, formation and tactics to suit each match, and I think that's where Ronnie is falling down at the moment. @Eggs said a while ago that managers very often come across formations by mistake, and it's absolutely true. Just wish it would happen sooner rather than later.

I agree. It's one thing to have a squad, it's another to know how to use it. He's not dumb. I just think he's a little stubborn in some of his thinking. There's no question he's made us a better team though, for all my moaning. I just think he's missing some obvious things but ok that's football.

Nah.

So let me get this right, he wants to play in a specific way and that takes time to implement and it started to click in at home against Arsenal which was in December 2016 but still didn't click in away from home several months later by May 2017. Now we've got to wait for it to click in again at home and then at some point it will click in away from home but may, based on last season, still not have kicked in again by the end of the season in May 2018.
Pretty much. We have changed system again from last season and we can see it in action now even if right now it's not too exciting to watch.

Take Into account here that this is meant to be the start of a long term change at the club so if we aren't challenging for the league by Christmas it isn't the end of the world but if koeman gets his system working then there is a lot more he can do going forward.

In my mind when all is said and done it will be this:

Pickford

Coleman Keane Williams Baines

Gueye Schneiderlin
Klaassen
Bolasie Sigurdsson

Rooney
Take it you're assuming that we don't bring anybody else in mate.

I think the back 4 will take care of itself (other than resting players) once everyone is fit.

But I believe he will swap and change the midfield and attack to suit the opposition. So I can't see it being a 1 fix suits all scenario as you suggest. Plus there are a lot of games to play so rotation will play a part to keep players fresh. For instance, I can't see all 3 of Klaassen, Rooney and Sigurdsson starting many matches, but 2 of the 3 will be starters in most. Think we'll bring in a new forward who will rotate with DCL. And when Bolasie is fit I can see him rotating with Sandro, with Lookman and Mirallas as back up. Some games we'll play 3 defensive minded midfielders. Some games we'll play 4231, others 433, and others a diamond with 2 up top. I really think we'll mix it up depending on the opposition.

Or that's what I'm hoping is going to happen anyway.:p

My choice would be Cuco on the bench.

Kenny right back in a 5 and Holgate right back in a 4.

After some games then evaluate if Kenny can dislodge Holgate in the 4.

Also see if Holgate could push Keane out and into a left sided position...

Makes sense to me but there is a reason Koeman is not playing Kenny yet. Its not just for the sake of it.

I wish we knew what it was though. Because I haven't seen anything that jumps out that would make me think 100% he should have not played a minute of meaningful football this year.

I know he will chop and change it around but I would expect he would be building a squad to play a certain way with a certain formation in mind with everybody fit to choose from. Yeah, we have a lot of games to play and can't play our first choice every week but you'd still want him to be working towards some sort of plan and long-term vision for the squad.

Problem for.me there is where is the new striker? If we get the new striker where does rooney go? Why are we shifting siggy wide when he's openly said that's why he failed at spurs etc

Yeah same, I do like the look of Kenny.

However Koeman is one of the best ever defenders to walk the planet so I am assuming/hoping he knows what's best for the lad.

I disagree with you on what I'd want mate. If we had the quality players that City, Chelsea and to a lesser degree United have at their disposal, I would say you can afford to chose a way of playing and formation, because you have the quality of player that you can rely on to pull it off most of the time. Probably Spurs too if you look at their starting XI. But you only have to look a Arsenal and Liverpool to see that it doesn't always work for the second tier teams. They try and play the same way all the time and sometimes they get found out.

We don't have the quality of starting XI that the top 6 have, but I believe that we do have a good cross section of skills in our squad now, and I would like us to use these to match the opposition. If everybody was fit and available for selection, I would be very surprised if he played the same XI to play Arsenal away, as he would to play West Brom at home.
