Ronald Koeman discussion

The schedule must have been severely pegged back since the summer then. Remember when it was all talk of getting a top class manager in and going all out for a Champions League spot and putting Everton back at the top table?
This season??????

lollollollollol

Erm.........That'll be no, no I don't remember because it was never said.

To see some of the verbal diarrhoea being spouted on here you'd be forgiven for thinking Koeman had joined a side that had won the league last season! Not an extremely poor side (which is exactly what we are) who have been crap for nearly two and a half year's. They didn't play the passing game well under El Fraudo as our league placing and results for the last two seasons indicates so why on earth do people seem to think Koeman would be able to transform this team of spineless cowards, who don't seem to be able to string a couple of passes together into a decent side while playing in a totally different system? We've given this group no hoppers long enough now to show SOMETHING and they've failed at every turn. It's time to face reality here and face the fact that no manager in the world, no matter how good they are could make this team any good. Get rid of the lot (with a few exceptions) asap!

Its true Khal cant remember his name at the minute,it was around the time Dion Dublin was starting out and Cambridge were in the then 1st division so it worked well for them for a good couple of seasons

Was it Beck?

I could well imagine him doing sommat like that :)

Was it Beck?
The name rings a bell, the thing with football fans is we are fickle by nature,if a manager hits on a winning formula then finesse is largely forgotten about, the RS throughout the 70s/80s bored me with the take a lead then back pass, but that period is remembered for winning trophies,Arsenal under Graham boring defensive football but the fans remember being successful,Wimbledon,Bolton to a degree are the same,it all about results in the end and at the moment we arent getting them

My view is that there's undue emphasis being placed on the current personnel and that belief that changing their names is going to be the solution will prove false.

This is a systemic issue we have here, not personnel. The inability of this manager to set up a team in any cohesive formation or style of play is both surprising and frightening in equal measure.
Only time will tell, but Koeman generally got the balance right between ball players and stoppers at Southampton.

I would expect him to bring in a few midfielders that are a bit more like what we became used to pre-Martinez over the next two windows.

They don't have to be super-expensive worldbeaters, either. Clasie and Romeu would look like Guti and Redondo in this team.

No mate. The FBs were usually there, they just didn't get close enough to wide men to stop them swinging crosses in...just like they're still not doing.
Dave they weren't - I remember sky doing a piece on this great at times to watch but defensive madness when we lost the ball. Even the lesser teams got quickly onto what were significant gaps all over the pitch.

Some of the players are to blame definitely but, with respect, i'm not having that Ashley Williams - having played at the best 'small' club for possession football for years - has abandoned everything he knows and is good at to launch the ball forward of his own accord.

That's come from the manager. But why?

With one up front and pace on the wings, why is he telling Ashley Williams to launch it?

We are going direct because we're so slow out from the back mate. Think of how many times we tend to lose possession in dangerous places last season.

I think that's the reason - he wants to bypass that knocking it about aimlessly at the back and get it to the forwards quickly.

On paper, that's fine, but the issue is our midfield doesn't have the legs to get up in support (bar Gueye) and Barkley seems scared to do so.

So to get this 'direct' style (which is a stop-gap IMO until he can get players in who he really wants) to work he does need to change it to get more up there in support (i.e. a 4-4-2) . It's not poor football when it works - we're simply aiming to get it to the players who can do the damage in forward areas.

Mourinho
""Everton is not a passing team any more like they were in the past. Everton is a team that plays direct: goalkeeper direct, Ashley Williams direct, Ramiro Funes Mori direct. Everything direct."

He's bang on. The football we play mostly is long ball. It's horrible. We are so predictable. I hate watching us at the moment.

Hoping it's just a temporary thing before he brings his own players in. 80 minutes of our forward play was offensive to the eye yesterday.

I agree Lukaku is not a target man, and what we were doing previously wasn't working either - I'd be very happy if we went to 4-4-2

Been crying out for 4-4-2 for a long time - loads of clubs now have 2 up front. How much better did we look with 2 proper wingers and another striker to partner Rom? I wonder if RK will learn from it or revert to the dire option of 1 up front?
