I must announce my arrival here by confessing that for the past two seasons I have been willing Everton out of the top flight. Not for any Everton-related reasons but more to prove myself correct over my judgement of Martinez, which was that he just wasn't very good despite what the media tell everybody, who decided to gush over his 'great escape' every year at Wigan without ever acknowledging that he had got them into that situation in the first place whilst his predecessor in Steve Bruce had just achieved their second highest Premier League finish before Martinez took over, if i remember rightly.

Besides this, Everton never really entered my thoughts much until the last 24 hours, what with also being the supporter of a mid-table Premier League club I only tend to really look up the table to see where we could be, rather than what is going on underneath us. I often thought of Everton as being the more cultured, civilised sibling of Liverpool, but a lot of what I have read on here and on twitter suggests that delusion must be on the Merseyside curriculum. Being a child of the Premier League era, my interest in club history is limited, I tend to watch what is in front of me, but I have heard a lot mentioned about your glorious history in the last 24 hours (i'll google it later). Which got me thinking, there was some club that came down to us at the end of last season and chanted from start to finish about how much more they had won than us which really put a dampener on our 6-1 victory as it obviously sunk in how we just weren't worthy of our visitors' company... I wonder what ever happened to them?

Now this is football, whilst most of our fans and many in the media are asking the question of 'why?' (albeit it's more of a 'WHYYYY!?!?!?!?') with regards to whether our Ron would opt for Goodison, it really wouldn't surprise me that much, but I have to think if I were him then I would think what is the point? Having secured a couple of more than respectable finishes with a side that has its best players sold every season, he's shown himself to be very adept and very versatile, often switching formations and styles and 9 times out of 10 getting it spot on. Whilst I don't think the big boys abroad would come calling as of yet, I think some of the ones here would take a keen interest, and if I were him that's where I would head whilst my stock was high. Stepping sideways (or backwards really, looking at the table), would be make or break for his future options, if he fails at Everton then he would sacrifice his crack at a big job, i think it'd be a very dangerous move for his career. Added to that, i'm not convinced "Ronald Koeman is coming" would be words strong enough to convince the likes of Romelu Lukaku or John Stones (who's horrendously overhyped, by the way) to forego a chance at Champions League football elsewhere. Whilst a great manager he is, a miracle worked he ain't, players would be sacrificing more than just a solitary season if they were willing to wait and see if Everton could offer them CL football. Which would essentially leave him in a similar position to when he joined us - rebuilding from scratch - that's not really progression is it. Plus he's passed up equally illustrious roles this season at the likes of Swansea and Sunderland, and now Watford are on the look out for a new boss I really think he'd be too spoilt for choice of lower-half Premier League clubs that it'd just be easiest for him to stick with little ol' Southampton. But, then again, he wouldn't be able to say "yeah but look how much we won last century!" when questioned why his team is sat in 12th, so it must be a tough one.

Anyway, hopefully he stays with us, but as I said, nothing would surprise me in this league anymore, sometimes manager's can have their heads turned when we least expect it (£££££). Does Pep know you're looking for a manager? Surely the ink hasn't quite dried on his Man City contract yet, i'm sure he'd jump at the chance of managing one of England's super-clubs...
Is Southampton full of seamen? It's just I think you have some on your chin.

LOL at the people on here thinking we won't be a sidestep (at best) for Koeman.

As if he'd be arsed about history anyway.

Also that lad was honest and pretty much spot on in most of his post, I don't get why people are getting pissy about it.
For me mate I'm not worried if its a sideways backwards or forwards step. Martinez was a forwards step for him. Jose would be a backward step for him. Koeman sideways backwards or forwards depending on your take on things. De Boer, could be either one.

That lad was honest based on current perceptions, and on current league position. The rest was tosh.

Have you finished building the Rickie Lambert statue for leading you to promotion from league one and the championship yet?

OK so how do you compare clubs without comparing their history?

We are more known then Southampton FC

We have created more legends then Southampton FC

You can't based it on the last two years, that when you compare managers so yes Southampton has the best manager over the last two years.

Honestly if Koeman chose Southampton over us. I wouldn't want him anyway as that proves he doenst get the club so fair play to him. Tbf he should not think twice about leaving Southampton for us.

Ssshhhh we going fishing here.

Who are you trying to kid, you don't even win the biggest Saints competition, that goes to people who play with an egg and Paddy.

Southampton fans are a miserable bunch aren't they, who could blame them?

2 Seasons of selling thier best players and not spending all the money they recoup. I can imagine thier forum full of anti board thread and it must be absolutely depressing to be supporting the club. We know, been there and done that and thank god we have moshiri now. There's only 4 words for them.

Where's your money Southampton???

Bit sad really.. I like Southampton. I like that they develop talent from their academy and give them ample first team opportunities to prove their worth. I like that they are competitive despite having the core of their squad ripped apart seemingly every summer. But having Saints waste their time by signing up on here for feeble wind up attempts is more than a little disappointing. Thought they had a little more class than that.
Haha have you ever been down there? Class? Hahahahahahahsh

All Everton fans need to get a reality check here. Over the past three years under Martinez you've been on the slide. You've probably got rid of him just in time before you became the next Aston Villa or Newcastle. I say "probably" because depending upon what happens this summer with players leaving you could easily be facing a relegation fight next season. The reality is that you've got a massive rebuilding job to do. Koeman is on the brink of getting Southampton a top 4 finish. That will depend upon what happens this summer with players leaving although on a daily basis now players are extending their contracts. No disrespect but why on earth would Koeman leave Southampton now to go to Everton when 12 months from now he will either get the Arsenal or Barcelona job? He won't.

History matters most when your present stinks and your future looks bleak.

Or you're being called out by a yo yo club who think finishing seventh is an achievement. Our present stinks but we've now got money to spend (which hasn't been the case) and everything's about to change on and off the field.

Yes, because currently, and in the last 30-odd years, our history is incredibly poor. We've barely hung on to our premiership status a few times, and most fans, to be quite honest here, don't give a rats arse about history, and only teams who haven't won anything in years keep banging on about it. The RS do it every single time anyone mentions a title too, despite the fact I hate myself a bit for that comparison.

Don't get me wrong, I'm proud of our history, we WERE a great club, but therein lies the problem - 'were'. Should Koeman go to Villa then, seeing as their history is better than Saints'? Or Preston, or Wolves? No, no he won't, because in most cases managers want to build for the future, not for the history of the club, and those two clubs have nothing to offer and are quite on the low right now. As things stand, ours is more or less uncertain and, despite the money, we'd be a massive rebuilding job - why would Koeman, in his right mind, get away from finally perhaps having a stable team with Southampton (and also possibly being in Europe), and then coming here only to have to re-do it? That's what I mean that it's a side step at best, as he'd go from top 6 Southampton to possibly top 6 Everton (and that'd be up to him and his buys). Different for a manager with no job currently, and nearly any club would be a step backwards for Mourinho, I still doubt we'd get him, but part of me hopes...

Our history should be a motivation of sorts to managers - to bring us back to the glory days - but our recent history (read: the last 25 years we've not had any silverware other than the Everton cup which we got for playing Everton) doesn't exactly show anything exciting, does it? Top 5 a few times, top 7 most the recent times, several seasons in the bottom half, several dances with relegation, two great escapes, one FA cup final and a few semi finals.

Southampton's history is poorer than ours, but does that mean they're currently doing worse than us? Nope. That's more or less what the lad said too, but because he had the word 'history' somewhere in his post - people stuck to that and called him deluded.
