I was looking forward to this WC because some of the best players in the world were in fantastic form, but sadly most of the big names all had a nightmare of a tournament.

Taking nothing away from Forlan (I like him a lot actually), but there really should be no reason he wins the Golden Ball over any of the above players.

The WC is the biggest stage and these guys flopped hard.

They certainly flopped.

Prepare yourself for a myriad of excuses / reasons why they did not perform....When it actual fact, it doesn't matter...Facts are facts and they did not perform.

1. Too many matches during a tough season.
2. An injury on Drogba's case and a tough group.
3. Cristiano hasn't benefited from a good side with the portuguese team for a long time.
4. Messi has got Maradona on the bench...meaning, argentines were never a good side to support Messi, just like Portugal wasn't.
5. Rooney... take it to number 1, just like the rest of the english squad.

Yeah, but Forlan's 32 and played for atletico all season. There's a fair few matches in that Europa league. So, What does that cat eat?

So far we've had a list of reasons / excuses, and a "yeah but..."

The history books won't list those reasons.

I actually thought Messi & Ronaldo did the best they could. They can't win a world cup on their own. no-one can these days can they???

If Ronaldo bothered to turn up in any game where his team wasn't already four goals up, Portugal might have done better though. Flat track bully.

Not entirely his fault. The team doesn't know how to play with him and the manager doesn't seem to be able to wash the responsibility off Cristiano's shoulders.

It's like he has to perform all the time. And by perform I mean to score all the goals. He needs to be relieved from that burden. There are good players in the portuguese squad, so they must be allowed to play also and just let Ronaldo roam waiting for the right time to unbalance things.

I thought Messi was outstanding? the rest - with the exception of Ronaldo all play in the PL, which says it all.

They were all gash, you can wheel out as many excuses as you like, tiredness, altitude, but the simple facts are, with regards the England players, they simply do not care about playing for England.

If they cant shake of a bit of tiredness for 90minutes, in the biggest National Tournament in the World, theres fck all down for them.

Messi wasnt great, but hes playing in a team without a clue, Ronaldo same.

I do a lot of them were carrying injurys, but still, its all about passion. We have all seen Rooney play thru the pain for United, its in his locker, he basically did care 1 little bit. He made all his money pre-tournament, now hes off on Holiday spending it all.

This is good, very good - straight from OPTA - stats don't lie - Rooney was the worst player at the WC in South Africa. Outshining Harry Kewell, and the immense Emile Heskey.

Okay, so we've established that the superstars weren't all that super... or even stars for that matter. But who would you say had a "breakout" tournament? I can only think of Muller from Germany.
