Ross Barkley joins Chelsea, er, Villa on loan

The problem with Barkley is that he has always played like a street footballer. He lacks discipline and every manager has struggled to get through to him. You cannot develop as a player if you cannot learn. He’s no better now than when he first appeared.

I previously thought Barkley should have left the club much sooner to develop (like Rooney did) but I’m not convinced he would have developed regardless of where he played or who he played under. Can see similarities with Pogba (albeit he’s more talented) as he too looks uncoachable. Ferguson doesn’t let a player leave for nothing if he thinks they have something.

One of my football mad students said something similar the other day.

Spot on assessment that, I think he has more natural talent than Pogba, it's the bit between the ears that's stunted his development. Leaving the one club where he'd always feature when fit, and earn good money, appears to be a daft decision.
