Ross Barkley

I only caught a bit of the second half. At some points he seemed to be thinking too far ahead for his teammates, putting the ball where they should be, but not where they are. But you can see he's not afraid to keep trying even if something hasn't come off.

There were a couple of times he tried running with the ball, lost possession and dirty leeds broke, but he was tring to get back. As someone mentioned earlier, he's still developing physically, and he will make mistakes. I think there's enough there to see him being a very good player, and i'd rather he was playing regularly somewhere on loan than just warming our bench

I saw some of tonites game, some decent touches and flicks by Barkley tonite ! Also tried a few ambitious passes, some of them hit their target others didn't! Looks like a player with a lot of ambition, but early days yet with him

I can't see any cause for optimism on tonight's performance. His technical ability is no use at all without the nous to use it.

He played several short passes to teammates who were already marked when he could and should have retained possession. He is dispossessed far too easily. Good midfielders all have the knack of shielding the ball, but Ross doesn't seem to have mastered that skill yet.

It may be too early to write him off, but he has a long way to go to reach premiership standard.

He's a player you want on the ball all the time and looks a class above even at 18. On the turn he is pretty sluggish, almost coasting defensively. Needs bringing up on that, hopefully round off a very promising player.

Thought he was in and out of the game tonight. First 10 mins he wasnt upto much, gave the ball away but then came into with some neat passes.

Into second half he started to tire and was giving the ball away but then got a second wind and came into it in the second part of the second half and did some good things and looked to try and make things happen.

He did look short of fitness and confidence IMO. With us last season when he broke into the team he was always showing and wanting to be on the ball, trying a trick or to take a man on and tonight, although he would make a move and show for the ball, he didnt exactly demand it off of his team mates.

Did work hardish and try to track back but it's easy to see that that isnt his strong point. But he does get his head up and look to go forward and due to lack of movement and understanding, he couldnt play certain balls or passes got cut out or went astray.

But weve got to remember he's only 18, this is the first time in a number of years he's had a real run of games at a good level!. An injury like he suffered can set players back and he does need time to come on and fulfill his potential and the only way he will do that is by playing games and by being at Wednesday for longer, he will definitely get that and his game will benefit alot for it!.

I hope now that weve signed Hitzlsperger, we will be willing to let Barkley stay at Sheffield Wednesday for a while and it will bring his game on in leaps and bounds.

We must remember that he is still only eighteen and has probably no more than a dozen first team games played.

As with all youngsters you got a bit of everything in his performace.Sometimes he does the wrong thing, sometimes he can be lazy, sometimes naieve, sometimes he shows the skills that only top players show. The moment near the end was top class.

He will benefit so much from nights like tonight...but he is not ready for our first team yet.
Extend the loan on a month by month basis,I think that we will see a remarkable improvement by next May.

Inesta, Xavi, Fabregas, Silva, Arteta, Carzola, Mata, etc etc are all creative players but all have high work rates who don't just "drop into space and that's it" they hustle without the ball.

Even Ozil does this. He's horizontal most of the time he's that laid back, but will close down and win the ball back when needed.

Just a few examples. Just because a player is creative they're not removed from defensive responsibilities and work rate. The ones that do are either on another planet technically... Or never make it at a high level.

He almost reminded me of an early Matt Le Tissier tonight. He was lazy.

And no, I'm not saying Ross Barkley is the new Totti, or Zidane. I'm saying he plays a similar role in a tactical set up.

And by the way, if he turns out to be as good as Le Tissier, then I'd be delighted. To compare him negatively to Le Tissier really hints at your lack of footballing knowledge I'm afraid - he was a hell of a footballer.
