Ross Barkley

Some people hate stats, however a lot of clubs use them extensively and the likes of Squawka gather vast amounts of data. According to them Ross has had the third best season of any player aged 23 or younger in Europe. Only Dybala and Kane have higher scores.

Whoscored have him as the 57th best player of any age in Europe this year (above Aguero for example)

People are way too harsh on Barkley.

As I say I don't think he was a poor player, far from it. Just don't think he has enough heart or commitment. His derby display was inexcusable, just jogging around as people breeze past him. I know he's a number 10 but you see Dele Alli putting a shift in every week. That's my main problem with Ross. Got all the ability in the world, just don't know if he has the desire or brain to make the most of it. I hope he does.

Unlike Alli, Ross has had a massive career defining injury - hes bound to be aprehensive. Only time is going to change that.

He needs to play with a bit less fear of criticism. Worrying about making a mistake inevitably leads to making a mistake.

He looks like he's terrified of making a mistake half the time. You can almost see the cogs whirring around in his head. He either hesitates, makes the wrong decision, plays the ball too hard or too light, or runs into the nearest man while showing too much of the ball.

He needs to do a bit less thinking about how he's going to beat his man when he's got the ball, and more about where the ball's gonna end up when he hasn't.

He's had a few full seasons now, if he hasn't improved in any of the categories I've mentioned by the end of next season - especially under new tuition - then I'd get rid, because he'll never improve.

I reckon his hesitancy came about and his confidence took a hit once he started playing for England. "safety first... Don't go doing anything exciting now"

But Gerrard was a DM when he started and barkley has a free role.

What the stats don't tell you is the amount of wasted attacking opportunities we make due to his passing and decision making.

He does one good thing a game and gets lots of praise for it and 10-20 bad things and no one in the media mentions it or brushes it off.

Praise and confidence boosting talk is great but sometimes a player needs to know the areas where he is going wrong to improve them.

Hopefully a new manager will sort this out because at the minute Roberto is ruining a whole load of our young players
No one in the media mentions it you say, how about the England manager who has give him loads over the last 2yrs. He miss places a pass for England and the commentator goes in the meltdown. Yet Henderson & delpth and many more can give it away and nothing is said.

I think it's 50/50 at the moment 50% of the time he holds onto the ball to long, and 50% of the time he's got no options. And when he turns away from his man he will see only lukaku ahead of him, and maybe Lennon hugging the touch line. I'm sure Ross could spend the whole game passing the ball back and square. Like McCarthy. But Ross knows he's there to make things happen and knows there would be groans if he constantly passed back.

I think he should play where dembele plays for Spurs. In between dier & Ali. Evertime dembele gets the ball he sees Ali Kane lamela & ericksen in front of him. I always looked at dembele as a luxury flair player, but very inconsistent. Apparently he's now a stone and a half lighter and the fittest he's ever bin. This obviously down to a manger and his coaching staff

No there aren't excuses mate...

But, he's a 22-year-old who has been great for us this season. He went into that game in poor form, as did the rest of the team. It happens. Ro was turd, McCarthy poor, Baines, Besic... they were all pretty bad.

It's not as easy as been able to 'shut the crowd up'. Players just can't turn form in and off like a tap, and playing in a team devoid of confidence with little faith in the manager won't help...

He hasn't been great at all. He's been good in some games and utter cack in others. Great is when you've been great in most games - he hasn't in most.

While he can't turn form off & on like a tap, he can at least get involved more, not stand around like one in lewis's, like he did in the semi final. That was unforgiveable.

Something isn't right here. He's not keen anymore, seems to have lost his desire. Does he think he's sure of his place? I miss the lad who used to pick the ball up and beat players with speed and skill. Where has his speed gone? Still a nice footballer and picks out an amazing pass but I want the lad who showed no fear and put defences under pressure

still reeling from that meself!

I think the fact that any form of statistics have Berkely superior to Aguaro utterly discredits those statistics as a serious source of data!

As I said, his stats this season speak for themselves.

He has been great at times this season. At others he's been off and lately he's been pretty bad (he looked better yesterday).

However, 12 goals and 10 assists for us this season. At 22. The consistency will come. When he's in form and confident there's not many better young players around.

Even though he had a bad game at Wembley (well, dreadful first half, he was better when we stepped up in the second half, as they all were), he conversely was awesome for us at the Etihad in the league cup semi.

And however poor he was in the semi, he is clearly instructed to play high up the pitch. I wouldn't go as far to say his performance was 'unforgivable'. I'd say Rom (best striker we've had in years but also somebody who now thinks he's ready to be at a top top club) missing 7 chances including a penalty in our biggest game of the season was far worse...

Barkley will always get more grief as he is a local lad. That's a fact. It shouldn't be the case but because he can be so frustrating at times when he plays within himself then it will happen.

To say he hasn't had a great season is ridiculous though. He's been extremely good and if not for the emergence of Alli (who conversely has been found wanting in games like the WBA one last Monday when he was easily marked out of the game by Yacob), his good form would have been rightly praised a lot more.

Take the rough with the smooth. He'll get there, and he's very good as it is.
