The next few days will answer everything. If he doesn't sign a contract it wasn't a change of heart, but robbing the club that made him.

Time will tell because this isn't going away anytime soon as the press will love it.

Bit strange that yesterday WRD said this

"Barkley post yesterday, is that him and Koeman have seemed to be getting on the past couple of weeks and differences seems to be easing. Barkley has hinted very much about staying and Koeman seems to be warming to the idea"

Then he rejects Chelsea tonight. Maybe he's actually having second thoughts about a move. I honestly think this is one of them situations where nobody knows whats going on - I dont even think Ross is sure of what he wants.

Indeed.

That is why I am taking the Occam's Razor approach.

The simplest explanation is that he has had a change of heart and wants to stay.

OK, so to bullet point:

  • Barkley wanted out - that's confirmed now; the 'fresh challenge' stuff was legit.
  • Everton agreed a fee of £35m with Chelsea.
  • We signed all paperwork, the player agreed terms, everything done and only a medical to do. So he has effectively signed for Chelsea - all parties happy.
  • He either had that medical, was about to, or was even half way through it - it doesn't matter either way - when he decided to 'run away from the wedding'.
  • Moshiri has said Barkley changed his mind and wants to assess in January.

So the issue is that the player has allowed Everton to get into a position to get £35m for his services, when he's made clear he wants out, and then backed away to run his contract down OR he wants to sign a new deal as he has regrets.

Only one of those two bold bits can be true, and that's what needs clarifying. So there's no middle ground now - he's either realised he's made a mistake and got cold feet, or he's a massive snake who can't be excused by any reasonable minded fan because he's backed away at the last moment to grab a big signing on fee in the summer or in January.
Actually Tubey...... Made it perfectly simple for the drinkers amongst us. Top man

Cheers Tubes. But is the option I mentioned about spurs only agreeing to go for him in January not another option for that list? Pulls out last minute of a deal he wasnt totally sure on, and decided to hold off for the possible Spurs bid in Jan?

Are we actually allowed to do that give he's under contract ? Is that not a bit of a legal quagmire ?

The manager can pick an argument and then send him home, fine him or whatever. He can train and all the lads can give him a kicking. It's best to send him home out of the way, he can recover without our help. Just forget about him, he's gone....

I thought the same until I heard Moshiri give that interview. Sounded to me like he's basically going in January when he gets round to assessing his options

Because January the club would still be able to command a fee for him, make no mistake the club will put massive pressure on him to leave from this point forward.

IF Barkley wanted out he would now be a Chelsea player, IF he wanted to leave on a free then he simply turns down the contract via his agent and this wouldn't even be a story as such, same way McManaman did or Lewandowski did.

What happened today was a player who doesn't really want to leave and the club trying to push him out the door as hard as it could in order to get the best fee they could do.

Just don't see him signing any kind of contract for us mate. He deffo wants out on his term and his terms alone. Agent definitely influencing him too. Sadly for us, it seems the collapsed deal impacted on our funding of striker. £35m gone at tip of a hat. Thanks Ross.

Leaning towards the second as why go through all the palavar if was planning on running his contract down? Lot easier to just say it yesterday before all the documents signed.

Also leaves a big risk that nobody comes in for him in January and he is stuck with a Koeman that is annoyed and banishes him to the youth teams so he doesn't get any playing time to get back in England team for World Cup.

We'll get better info over next couple of days.
