Player Valuation: £40m
David Nugent is close to realising his dream of Premiership football after Sunderland launched a £6million bid to sign him.

Sportsmail can reveal that Sunderland manager Roy Keane has contacted Preston with a partexchange offer involving Stern John.

Keane has yet to receive an official reply but is confident after learning that his is the only bid.

It is understood that, in anticipation of Preston giving their consent for talks to begin, Keane has made plans to meet Nugent in Holland, where he is preparing with England for the Under 21 European Championship.

The 22-year-old striker, capped by Steve McClaren earlier in the season, attracted a failed £6mbid from Sheffield United in January and has been linked repeatedly with his boyhood idols Everton.

But Sunderland look to have the field to themselves, following the Bramall Lane club’s relegation and apparent misgivings at Goodison Park about whether he would fit in alongside Andrew Johnson.

Keane is believed to have offered two other players as part of the package but Trinidad and Tobago striker John is most likely to appeal to Preston manager Paul Simpson.

There may yet be some negotiating over John’s value, as Preston will lose up to 30 per cent of Nugent’s fee under the terms of the deal that took him from Bury to Deepdale in January 2005.

Now we all know why Nugent cost so much. Preston have to pay Bury 30% sell on clause.

Sunderland is the only club that bid for Nugent, looks like moyes isn't interested at all, or did he dither again?

In the absence of any information coming out of GP, I would hazard a guess that we have not contacted any other club yet about transfer targets. Newspaper talk is just that. Do not expect to see anyone soon let alone Nugent.

Hey Nero pass the fiddle.

he has a euro u21 to go to yet, then pass a medical for insurance purposes then agree terms.

if he is true blue, then he will insist on a buy out clause in his contract so that when everton do decide he is worth a gamble, the option is there. (bit like hunchbacks deal at blackburn)

I'm still not convinced we need him for a big bunch of money. If we could land him for 4M, yes - but at a higher price, I think Moyes has more important areas to spend money - midfield and defence.

A little of the point but Bully said in dissmissing the article about aj to west ham, that Everton also had substantial funds to strengthen the team.

I love the Jargon "substantial funds" how long is a peice of string

We might not really need him now, what pisses me off is to see him sign for someone else, and he go on and have a cracking season scoring 20 over goals and suddenly he's value at 20 million. It's one of thoes "we should have sign him during the summer" rant again.

i think how Vaughn and Anichebe performed last year has made Moyes think twice about buying a new striker.
Its a Beattie swap, he's looking for now I suspect, because I think if he stays till january, the young guys will make him look worse.
I hope Beatties training at the moment...

Why don't we just go ahead and buy Nugent. 6m will prove to be nothing this season, there is already talk of 200k a week players this season with the increased Sky dosh around.

There is NO POINT in signing nugent!

Heres why:

Hes unproven in the premiership, the championship is alot easier to play in than the premiership, who knows if he could cope...

The last u21 match he played on he missed 2 sitters, and generally didnt play well.

For the money they want we could buy a good proven striker for just 2 million or so more, someone like owen ( :) ), or van der vaart...if only..

but what im saying, maybe not them strikers, but someone else, with a name, a big name signing!

(also, weve got...johnson, anichebe, vaughan, mcfadden - all top strikers to me, and all could play in the starting line up without groans from the crowd - do we really need more strikers?)
