Rugby League 2022

Played the game for a couple of years in the 1980s whilst at university. Went along for the training and got drafted onto the wing. Went training once with Huyton RLFC.

Got confused with the re-organisation that happened around that time and have never really understood how the competitions are organised ever since ...

It’s been dying for years. Attendances dropping , viewing figures dropping, people playing the game, the skill set, amateur game killed off. Could go on for days about the mess it’s in.

Growing up in a rugby league town, you see the demise of the sport even more. I’m 34, seen the game go into a massive decline in the last 15 years. When I was growing up, you had loads of amateur teams, kids teams. Now I think the is one open age amateur team and about 2 clubs for kids in certain age brackets. Very sad. When it was played right, the was nothing like it, sadly now it’s just all beefed up players who run in straight lines. It’s like watching
Rugby Union from 20 years ago, boring.

It's been going downhill for a while sadly. The recent death of Tuigamala prompted me to think back to the Wigan team he was in, and it was literally star names in every position. Now there are hardly any star names in the entire league, with the World Cup sure to see even more players go down under.

Is the officiating really poor over there atm? Watching the first round of the nrl where tries are getting taken away due to the interpretation of the obstruction rule is very frustrating.

RL is my first love, coming from an RL town , however I agree the sport is not what it was.
It’s the style of play for me. All teams play pretty much the same way. 5 drives and a speculative high kick to the corner.
I’d introduce a rule, 3 points for a try with a kick in the tackle and 5 points for a non kick try. This would encourage half backs to be more creative with ball in hand And bring a bit more variety to the game.
Players are indistinguishable too. Athletic and fast doesn’t always mean a better spectacle.

Brilliant game run by idiots, its quickly turning into touch rugby with these new rules and is making it unwatchable with all the needless sin binnings.
Its like they get together at the start of every season and come up with a plan to wreck the sport with gimmicky rules and watering it down.
You can see the players hate it but once one starts play acting to gain an advantage they all follow because they want to win and now the floodgates are open.

Unless the travel of direction is changed and changed quickly, this sport is dead.

I find it strange that one of the biggest thugs in his day, a certain P Cullen, seems to be at the center of all this crap… he must have gone soft in his old age!
