Russia & Ukraine in 1990

This is a bit of a long shot but is there anyone else in here that went on a trip to Russia and Ukraine in 1990 with a load of other random kids from Liverpool? I was 15 at the time and went on a trip that I think was arranged by Liverpool council. There were about 15 kids aged 10 to 15 selected from various schools in Liverpool. As far as I know, none of us knew each other before the trip and in the following 31 years I haven't seen any of them since. I know at least a couple of the lads were Liverpool fans so hopefully not on here but the rest I've no idea. So, massive long shot, was anyone else on that same trip or do you know of any of your mates from school back in 1990 that disappeared for a week on a mysterious trip?

The furthest I got was Colomendy in North Wales, via Anfield Comprehensive.

TBH mate that’s sounds like you have taken a trip in 1990 . Weird one that no one new each other for a full week in Russia . Good luck mate you might have some luck on facebook maybe

I honestly wouldn't know where to start on Facebook. I don't remember any of their names and they could live anywhere in the world by now. I just thought with them all being scouse kids there's a slim chance they could be a blue on here.

You don't mention the purpose of the trip?

Was it sponsored by Russia/Ukraine or locally?

Sounds a bit Manchurian Candidate to me. Especially as you can't remember anybody else from the trip lol

I was 15 at the time, for all I know my parents might have been trying to sell me off to some communist family.

I think the idea was for it to be an exchange with a bunch of Ukrainian kids coming over to Liverpool a few months later but that never happened due to a lack of funding. We went to visit a Ukrainian school while we were there and I had a pen pal for a while afterwards. Obviously this was before the time of social media or even e-mails.

No smoke without fire.

15 apparently randomly selected kids, none of who knew each other being shuttled off to the rapidly disintergrating Eastern Bloc, a scientist backed by some disgruntled military types hatches a plan.

The return exchange never happened! (Why would they expose the kids to Western freedoms, it would only speed up revolt back home)

The pen pal may not have been the child you met, but a trained agent subtly continuing with the indoctrination through certain keywords innocently dropped in.

Some things are better left well alone.

(but hey, good luck tracking them down)
 

I had a special trip / session towards the end of year 11 which was basically "you lot are going to need to know how to go to a job interview before most of your peers"

Ours was just down the road, as opposed to an international jolly to an unstable part of the world 4 years after a nuclear disaster though. Not sure whether to feel short-changed or not!
