It's almost as if the players have taken their lead from the the Boards lack of confidence shown in Sam (18 month Contract that some fans have been saying is effectively 6 months from day one) and are free-wheeling until the next manager comes in.

It's not "meh" though is it mate?

It's an example that for two, maybe three, generations of Evertonians, the thought of playing in the second tier is a completely unfathomable outcome

Everton are a top flight side who belong in that company

It's literally the only thing we have left as a fan base

Therefore, to hear we can't even rely on that any more is definitely a cause for concern

If Everton loses its top flight status, what does it have left?

This.

There is a peception of the club outside of Evertonia that is way different to other clubs among the Wee 14.

A belief that Everton will eventually get it right and rise up again.

And this is based purely on our longevity in the top flight in this country.

We have won bugger all in decades but when people talk about the history of football in England the fact Everton have spent more seasons at the top level gives us a cache no other club can match.

Even in the modern era, we are one of only six clubs which have been an ever present in the EPL.

Middle age fans can remember Spurs and United being relegated in the 70s.

I remember Liverpool being promoted in the early 60s.

Chelsea and City were yo yo teams for years and years before sensible investment transformed them.

But you need to be over 65 to have been alive when last we were relegated and well over 70 to have any recollection of Everton as a second division team.

This is what keeps us, however remotely it appears right now, on the coattails of the top four or top six or whatever shorthand you want to use for the elite clubs in the country.

We are like an old aristocratic family fallen on hard times.

Still living in a crumbling mansion but still retaining the pride and dignity our heritage affords us.

Relegation wipes all that away at a stroke.

Well said

Relegation would be catastrophic, and I wouldn't back us to come back from it any time soon either

Hang on...

I seem to recall you waxing lyrical over our transfers;

When the window closed, to someone moaning we hadn't replaced Lukaku you said;

Changed your tune now?

Oh and;

That idea no good then?

Still dont think we need an out and out goalscorer? Or someone who can offer something different?

So, lets be fair.

My point remains;

This side isn't relegation fodder, it contains a lot of top international players and the manager shouldn't be talking up the possibility to protect his own reputation.

This side strengthened on last season in every position apart from upfront - we finished 7th in a league of our own last season and despite is being woeful this season, we're 6 points of 7th.

An Everton manager 2 wins from 7th, having just spent near £50m and the window still open shouldn't be talking up relegation prospects.
But, we are relegation fodder because we are close to the bottom three and that is not as a result of a sudden drop in form.

The bit in bold isn't true though. In the 90's we survived relegation by the skin of our teeth on more than one occasion and barring an out of character Gareth Farrelly goal we would have gone. It was entirely fathomable. That doesn't excuse this horror show, with it's very own smirking ringmaster making it all about him, and you're right that relegation would strip away the last layers of lustre from this once great club but let's not rewrite history. Plus, I suspect @Papa Shango meant "meh" in such a way as to express how underwhelming it is that not being relegated is our only creditworthy achievement in the past 23 years (not trying to put words in your mouth Papa, if I'm wrong I'm happy to be corrected).

Well by that logic Sam is perfectly within his right to talk about relegation

BTW, all he's actually said is that our current form is relegation form.

I'm not a fan, but he'd be getting pelters - and rightly so - if he was saying we were playing well.
have not played well since he took over even with the few lucky wins.

Because he was a stubborn, limited manager who managed to alienate both fans and players by the looks of it.

Then again - least he took over a season to do that, Allardyce has managed it in about 3 months, remarkable feat

I think it's because he built an absolutely dreadful squad with no pace or quality mate.

But we didn't get relegated did we?

We stayed up, and at the time we knew it was unacceptable to be in that position

Everton stay in the top division, that's the bare minimum we expect

That's what I meant
