Tsunami devastates Samoa...

We had three minutes to flee tsunami, say villagers in Samoa | Tsunami hits Samoa, American Samoa | News.com.au

WITNESSES told of scenes of panic and confusion after a Pacific tsunami swamped the islands of Samoa, smashing buildings, throwing cars and hurling boats ashore.
Young men banged gas canisters like "church bells'' to bring thousands of frightened people streaming to higher ground as the disaster unfolded in coastal towns below.
Foreign tourists and residents of the sleepy Pacific archipelago were awoken by the 8.3-magnitude earthquake before fleeing a devastating tsunami which sucked cars out to sea and lapped buildings' second floors.
"We jumped up and joined the queue of traffic. There were police cars going up the road just telling residents to go up to higher ground in a very orderly fashion,'' Tourism American Samoa official David Vaeafe told Sky News from the US territory 100km from Samoa.
"In the mountains young men were banging gas cylinders as church bells, like they were calling people to church. This went on throughout most of the morning.''

I hate Tsunamis.

Terrible news, heart goes out to those people. We **** of our country , but to live in the knowledge one day your whole life could be taken away by the force of nature must be awful. Just after the Phillipines too.

Makes you remember to take a moment and reflect on how bloody lucky we all are to be born in such a safe country. Biggest thing we have to worry about is injuries to Arteta and Neville. Puts it in perspective a little :(

Yeah...2cm of Snow in winter and this country grinds to a halt! How do you think this great nation of ours would cope if a Tsunami hit Liverpool or London?

1607 Flood in Bristol Channel - A UK Tsunami?

A new report commissioned by Defra has confirmed that a tsunami threat to the UK exists, but is very low. The report, published on Monday 27th June, assesses the risk of a tsunami impact on the UK, and concludes that that there are a number of possible, though rare, circumstances in which tsunami-type events with an effect on the UK could be generated by seismic or landslide incidents. For most scenarios the report suggests that wave heights produced at the coast by tsunami-type events are unlikely to exceed those anticipated for major storm surges. All major centres of development on coasts and estuaries have defences that have been designed to withstand such surge waves.
For the UK and Europe there are records of several significant events in the past, particularly an earthquake in 1755 and an ensuing tsunami that together destroyed Lisbon. There is also firm geological evidence of a tsunami impacting the coasts of Scotland and northeast England following a submarine landslide off Norway about 8,200 years ago.
The study was led by the British Geological Survey. It used historical and geological evidence to assess the potential risks and impacts of a tsunami. It also considered the likelihood of early detection, the lead-times likely to be available from detection to impact, and the practical potential of warning and response systems.
Floods minister Elliot Morley said: “After the devastation that hit parts of south Asia at Christmas, we felt that it was important to look at the likelihood of a tsunami affecting the UK and what the risks might be. The report confirms that the probability is very low, and that in most cases our current defences to major centres should be sufficient. However, we will be looking at what further appropriate steps could be taken to adapt our existing warning and response systems.

a saw a program on discovery about tsunami's, it basically said the max height of waves in a tsunami triggered by an earthquake is based on the movement of plates, about thirty feet, a landslide tsunami can cause waves of 300+ feet so be on guard...might of made up the figures based on my hazy memory but this link should help....
