2024/25 Sean Dyche

We won our last game, so I hate him less currently.

Hes an awful manager, but the players are very much still putting in the work, we just need to hope he reads a tactics book or something.

Tactics book you say?

xG so far: 7.4.
Goals scored: 7.

"UP"

Good sign that, good that at least some players can score what DCL misses again. Already 4 big chances missed this season.

However we had 3 50/50 games against Leicester, Bournemouth and Palace. You can end up with 9 in the case, with 0 in the best worst case. These games could go either ways.

Expected Goals Conceded.

If you look at it as a singular statline it looks pretty good that we're doing okay in it. However, any normal actual analysis is done on the combination of all of the expected and actual statistics, as in this vacuum they make no sense. It's like being happy your car gets ridiculously great mileage, but ignoring it's just idling in place all day as it has no wheels.

But mate, what is the point in stats if we can’t cherry pick them to suit a specific argument we want to make on that given day?

I’m sure someone has made a lot of money giving all these stat nerds a little jiggle in their big boy pants.

It’s a good job my eyes still work to tell me that X’whatever does not stop us playing awful football

Equally good and poor - we're not creating a massive amount but at least we're scoring the goals.

Even with 9 we'd still be almost/around midtable in the statline (by the way, Southampton are doing their best Everton impression by having almost 9 xG but scoring 3 goals )

As a stat nerd I say they have their value, but again - if you take all of them in. It's basically the moneyball/SABRmetrics approach which is supposed to yield results without taking into account style or anything.

This approach is limited in football as it's a lot of moving parts and variables you can't control and the game is a lot more complicated than the application that it originates from - baseball.

Jep, but that's unfortunately a long term problem at Everton and Dyche is another manager that won't solve it obviously.

Not against us in the cup, felt like they had fewer chances despite we shockingly gave up possession.

I’m far from a dyche devotee but All id say here is there are different expectations on the promoted managers aren’t there . Nobody is expecting anything from Southampton or Ipswich and Leicester fans seem to think relegation is a tough battle . Despite repeated relegation battles we’re rightly demanding to be in the prem and we started the season with loftier ambitions .

Man Utd I think is up there is tough jobs wise but I do think a club our size where you’re having to buy players on the never never , No board , riven by financial mismanagement, deductions and pending deductions, an absentee owner , marrying at times a fanbase who both rightly think the club is a giant with two fullbacks who are about the managers age . A side who haven’t won a trophy since I had a respectable waistline but believe we should compete . I think the disillusionment of the fan base doesn’t help either .

Honestly I think it’s about the toughest job out there or certainly it’s in contention . All this doesn’t mean I’m saying dyche is pulling up any trees mind .
Fair point and well articulated. If the aim of the game in the eyes of Joe Public or the media is that this is another season where success for us is safety, then I don’t think he has the toughest job at all.

Despite that ongoing background shenanigans I am sure other smaller clubs would like to be competing with our squad.

If we look at at through the prism of Everton fans rightly demanding more (than what we are currently getting), then yes I would see it that way, but I think the majority of us only expected at least a similar season with hopefully a modest improvement points and places wise. All this talk of we expected Europe (and to be fair I didn’t hear it direct so not sure where it came from) was well wide of the mark.
