Season sprint data

I’m a massive fan of Don Carlo. Think he’s definitely the man for the job and needs another couple of transfer windows to get his own team in place, especially given the vast quantity of dirge he inherited.

Anyone who’s watched us week after week this season will hardly be surprised by the data, but the sprint stats for the season are pretty damning.

Is it down to tactics/gameplan?
Too many slow players? Too many who just can’t be bothered?
Are our players fit enough?

Carlo is not an intense manager he’s very laid back and very philosophical with his approach and tactics. He’s not gonna call you out in training for lack of effort like mourinho did with dele alli. He’s the kind of guy who puts his hand on your shoulder and whispers ‘you’ll do better next time don’t worry’ instead of berating them.

I think one of the reasons he was fired at Napoli was because of some dispute with the players and the owner called him out for not being strong enough with the players.

It's not what you do - see Leeds
It's what you do with it - see Leicester
We do nothing obvs

But City & United seem to have the right balance - plenty of sprinting and distance very well aplied

I can’t make head nor toe of any of these graphs, maybe I’m just totally out of touch with football. When I watch it I even see 22 people knocking a ball about instead of numbers cascading down the screen, maybe I should see an optician.

Good players make the ball do the work. A long ball is fine when it meets its target.

It shouldn't be necessary to run around like a demon in football. Pace is important in defence and in transition but its only one aspect of the game.

It's probably a wonder we are where we are when you consider all of the things we so clearly lack.

First, you must always analyze statistics in a broader context.

Secondly, I'm pretty sure there's a connection between this statistic and the statistics in terms of pressing. The teams that are high on these statistics are also high on the PPDA statistics. There are some outliers, which I can see immediately.

Thirdly, Ancelotti's teams have never been known for their counter-pressure or for being particularly intense in the way they play football. Ancelotti is in many ways the protagonist of Guerdiola, Klopp, Tuchel, Pocchetino, Bielsa, etc.

Fourth, it shows that one can achieve success (and not success) without being at the top of such statistics. Just look at West Ham and Leicester, and opposite Southampton.
