Semi-Pro Teams

Isn't amatuer play for nothing, semi pro you play for like a blue square side, and go back to your day job on Monday?

In Ireland all the Hurling players are semi pro, well very few are professional - my Grandad pointed one out in Ireland walking up the street with one of them street cleaning contraptions

back in the days of the maximum wage a lot of decent players refused to turn fully pofessional as they were much better off playing semi-pro - they'd have their normal wage & then top it up with almost as much as a professional footballer, sometimes more! :dodgy:

I used to play for Racing Club Warwick in the old Midland combination league. We were classed as Semi-Pro. We were paid IRC about £30 - £50 per game, but had a full time job Mind you that was in the late 80's. Amateur is playing for nothing.(y)

Yeah, amateur is not getting any money for playing (I remember Hassan Kachloul being caught up in a debate about whether he was paid despite being classed as an amateur when he went to Scotland for a short while), semi-pro is a small wage to supplement your income from another job. I know a lad who used to be a semi-pro for Accrington Stanley (exactly) & he was paid a few quid a week for playing & going to training a few nights a week before they became professional & the players quit their other jobs to play full time & were paid enough to be able to do so
