Set Piece Coaches

I'm just looking at some stats and our set piece goals have dropped off a cliff since we employed one. Also you would think there would be a rub off benefit from having one, by scoring some goals from crosses - which we don't do. Is the set piece coach just a modern day myth / job for a mate / a well thought through appointment - or have we got a dud. Will they exist in 5 years time or will they be seen as the emperors new clothes. Did anyone think chucking a decent wedge of cash at Charlie Adam was a good idea. Confused!!

What are the stats for conceding from set pieces?

something about parking the bus, and the transport coaches dilemma round bmd. Without McNeil our set piece deliveries have been more miss than hit.

I have not seen an improvement in this department under Charlie Adam. Whether the position of a set piece coach has merit is another debate, but his position at the club certainly lacks merit at present.

Maybe we could ditch the role, but we could also improve on Adam. The only thing I'd like to add is that our best corner taker (McNeil) is yet to start a game since he has entered the job.

I would get rid of Adam at the end of the season but I appreciate others may be willing to offer him longer in the job.

….set pieces have dropped since McNeil got injured.

I think what it shows is quality of delivery is more important than the coach. I’ve not noticed any innovation since Adam came in, maybe we’ve added long throw to our routine.

Worth noting; I don’t know if the scope of Adams’ work also includes defending set-pieces.

I'm pretty sure the villa set piece coach has improved them and he was one of the first in that role. Moyes has just hired Adam to give him a job and I doubt he has any experience in the job, whereas I'm pretty sure Villas was an expert.

Absolutely no need for this Adam character when we have Bainsey on board🙄👍
I don’t think a good set piece coach is there to teach a professional footballer how to hit a dead ball though. It’s not the kicking of the ball they should be working on, it’s the plans, the movement, the thinking outside the box etc. It hasn’t really looked that way here though.

Taking a good free kick does not make you a good set piece coach. The role is far more of an analytical role, its looking at how the opposition attacks and defends in situations and working out how you can exploit them or control them and have multiple variations to choose from. Adam was always a strange choice for the role but Baines is not the answer either.

The most Likely reason for us firing blanks from set pieces.

What I have noticed (especially with Arsenal & Villa) is that they at least attempt to vary their delivery in / or the set up on set pieces, all we do is loft it in - and without McNeil - not with any quality. What has Adam actually added? even I could say "just launch it in" as a tactic. We must have one of the tallest teams in the PL, so really set piece goals should be our low hanging fruit. I've seen the Arsenal & Villa Set Piece guys prance about prior to any set piece, is Adam in the ground? I've not been all the games, but never seen him??
