Don't agree, do you think we are in a better situation now that we have bought jag when yobo leave for african cup or lescott got injured?

You can't replace a player with an identical player no doubt about it, what we can do is try and have enough backup who can do the job as good as possible when they are being called. If arteta gets injured, I'd rather see pienaar replacing him rather than kilbane. That's the reason why we need to buy.

Yes we do have at least 3 names for each position. But the problem is that since we have many players that can play in many positions, their names pop up alot so it looks better than it is.
If I found 11 players that could play at each and every location on the pitch, from goalie to striker it would look great if I made a graph like you did Rob.. I'd have 11 names on each position... but one injury would still mean that I couldn't place a full team on the pitch.
Lets say that over the time between Christmas and New year we loose Jags, Neville and Arteta to injuries.
Would give us 2 RM, neither one has impressed me much (Osman, VdM), only one RB (Hibbert) and 3 CB for two positions. Wouldn't be much rotation and rest for those players with games every other day.

well, ok then lets face the WORST possible situation, african nations, yobo and anichebe are gone, lescott, arteta, cahill and AJ are all long term injured.

Thats a good point, I take it he's a regular for South Africa?
On the lines of squad availability, I think we need to factor in certain players are quite injury prone, or have an injury record, notably:
Hibbert
McFadden
Vaughan
Valente
VDM
Pienaar - so ive been told
So these players havent been exactly reliable in recent years, so I think we need to be aware of that too, so having enough cover to fill these plus any unexpected injuries I think is quite important.
