sotnas

Player Valuation: £10m
When I was a kid I used to play Soccer 7 on my ZX Spectrum 128k +2.

Of course I always managed Everton.

But there was a guy named Wilson in the team who, alongside Tony Cottee, was the striker.

I don't remember us having a Wilson in those years (88/89 I think).

Who was this lad?

probably ian wilson

he was shoite and probably better on the spectrum
Transferred in September 1987 for £300, 000 Everton: 1987-1988 Played 16 Scored 0 goals (Division 1) 1988-1989 Played 18 Scored 1 goal (Division 1) Scottish international Ian Wilson was signed by new Everton boss Colin Harvey in September 1987 for £300, 000 from Leicester City. Ian struggled to establish himself at Goodison, usually only playing when injury forced out Kevin Sheedy. He moved on to Turkish side Besiktas after two seasons on Merseyside. Ian is pictured above during the 1-1 draw against Liverpool on 11/12/1988.

[Poor language removed] he was... So it was the beginning of the end...

Cottee never lived up to the expectations, did he?

What about N McDonald? I think Colin Harvey once said that McDonald was great on his days. He stood by his signings, but the truth is it all started coming down under his reign.

Neil McDonald was awful in all honesty, Cottee did what he was paid to do, scoring goals, but Graeme Sharp was right, inferior players were being bought who quite frankly not good enough for Everton.

[Poor language removed] hell, what a terrible player he was :(
I know but driving the grandson home earlier Collymore was talking on the radio and said he learnt his trade of the likes of Bret A ngel no wonder he got depressed:lol:

that was where the rot started and we have never really recovered

the effect of neil mcdonald and ian wilson was i moved from the paddock to the altitude of the top balc. i just couldnt bear being so close to that action, and up there if i squinted i couldnt see them.
top tip*

I must say I'm amazed how further down we've fallen. Ok we lost the right wing in a very short time, but we kept Sheedy, Sharp, Reid, Ratcliffe, Watson and Big Nev, Bracewell's progress was affected by injuries.

I can concede they were all close to their thirties. But it wouldn't be difficult to build around such good and experienced players.

Instead players were bought paying prices above their real value (Cottee was UK's record signing !!! ).

The thing about poor finances is pure crap. We did spend money at the time.

true, the team that did the double was one of the best theyve ever had, but look how close we were, so we weren't too bad either, it was mainly after that when players realised we would be banned for a while that they all upped sticks, to italy, spain

Agree we weren't far.

But let's play the "what if" game... What if we had signed Barnes?

What if we had signed Beardsly to play alongside Sharp, instead of Cottee?

What if we had Molby alongside Reid? Instead, we had Harper because of Bracewell's permanent injury time.

Looking at that time, I think of it as a magic time.... Honestly it was never the Premiership that conquered me. It was the old football atmosphere, the fairy tales like Keegan ([Poor language removed] I know) who came from a lower league side. The Big Nev fairy tale.

Brian Clough's Derby County or Notts Forest miracle work.

These things just won't happen anymore in the Premiership.

the day the premier league began for me was the day that real football ended, it neutralised and sterilised our game , too much money is basically the problem with mercenaries coming for the cash, ticket prices through the roof, and last years tv deal was worth £37 for every available seat in the season so it can only be the wages and inflated fees that cause it.

all of a sudden i expect it to go bang and it'll be like someone pressing the reset button as far as cash is concerned,if it happened tomorrow then a lot of clubs would be in a far worse off position than us. the national team wont have a prayer as long as the prem. exists as it is, no team plays the english way, the way that saw the european cup on these shores every year,

jack charlton did it on the international stage and nobody could live with the irish, they just couldnt handle the way they played, up and at 'em football. its great to see some of the foreign superstars with their silky skills but its to the detriment of our game and our players that try to break through.

someone hit the reset now !!!
after all our league was marketed in asia before the prem cos they loved the way we played, and without all the fancy juans !!!

I wouldn't say that Liverpool or Everton played in the same style of the Irish nor did Forest.

The Irish were served, at some point, with really good players.

They had Lawrenson, Sheedy, Aldridge, Houghton, McGrath or Whelan. So it wasn't all down to the "put'em under pressure" stuff.

Their midfield was joy. The missing link was Roy Keane, imagine what would be that midfield with that crazy horse.

They had a style based on commitment, but they had players with bags of ability to support all that running.

After Charlton, things were never the same but neither the players had the same quality since then apart both Keane's.
