spending cap

Player Valuation: £35m
i've gotten into a couple of arguments about this with some friends so i was wondering what people on here thought

in many american sports, like american football, teams tend to have a salary cap, meaning every team will end up spending the same total amount on player salaries. this in turn helps keep the league even, which dynasties a lot less likely to form, and really makes every season into an entirely different league.

i've argued before about whether or not a salary cap would be good for a sport like association football,i titled the thread spending cap, because i think a cap should probably be applied to transfers as thats where most of the spending is done for association football, whereas in american sports people rarely 'buy' a player, but instead will trade for them.

i'm not saying i would be in favour of a spending cap, though you have to admit if there was one, we'd be on top of the table no question, since i don't think theres any dispute that we accomplish the most on a meager budget in the premiership.

obvioulsy it'd be near impossible to institute something like this the way the leagues are set up now, but does anyone think a cap would be a good thing at least in principle?

they have it in superleague but teams regularly flout the rules, wigan being the main culprits, and the fact that punishments dont arrive until 18 months after make a mockery of the rules. the cheating pie-eaters bought the most expnsive player in the world whilst already at their cap, if they hadnt bought him they wouldve been relegated that year, as it was they survived and got a point deduction 18 months later.

the best players will still play for the best teams with a smattering of stars through the league, for me the main benefit would be to get the players back on planet earth and in the real world, why shouldnt they have to get another job after they retire from the game, we need p.e. teachers , sports instructors and coaches for kids in all sports yet it seems to be below the former pro's these days.

the badged coaches that go around schools are fairly young themselves and certainly not all ex-pro's.

it would be interesting to know what the top players were on in our glory days and what that would amount to now with normal pay rises ? i reckon they were probably on 8 to 10 times a week what the average factory worker was on, that equation certainly wouldnt apply these days.

I'm not a fan of salary caps, clubs should be allowed to spend whatever they wish, but had to take exception to this remark (as one of the aforementioned pie eaters b)). Rugby league is a fine example of how a salary cap doesn't work. Sure Wigan and other teams have been found out for breaching it, but I find it highly unlikely that the likes of St Helens can have so many stars in their side whilst remaining within the cap, especially when you consider crocks like Paul Sculthorpe who barely plays but must be on a big old salary.

It's also clear that the cap has done nothing to flatten the competition, with the same sides winning time after time and the competition dominated by Saints and Bradford (and to a lesser extent Leeds). Since the cap has been in place if you take out Wigans solitary SL win the competition has had no more champions than the PL has.

:Di'm more in favour of it really to bring the wages down and get the players back in touch with reality, they are earning obscene amounts and now holding clubs to ransome, the ronaldo business today where he's claimimg he is a slave to ushited. mmmmmmm so now he's trying to make fergie lose his rag and sell him, i hope he's left to rot in the stands for the rest of his contract, banned from training and by the time his contract is up looks like he's wearing a fat-suit. i reckon he should become the example of a club saying it's our terms not yours, you set your terms when you signed so now you can stick to them, we are expected to stick to ours so you can do the same. shrek still owes him one so hopefully he'll keep injuring him in training as the insurance probably pays the wages of injured players.

as for it in superleague, if it conspired to stop wigan winning then job well done(y) didnt realise you were a pie bruce, must be the fact you dont end evrything with "pal":D

Yeah, unfortunately it's another example of my shocking effect on teams I support. I started supporting Everton in the mid 80's and Wigan in the early 90's. Just call me Jonah
