Sad to see that. 86 is a great span of life mind you. May he rest in peace.

A very good and popular coach during his time with us. His leaving us at then end of the 77/78 season, to have a go at management, was a big blow to Gordon Lee - his replacement, Eric Harrison, was unpopular with the players and wasn't in the same class, having been promoted from the youth set up, to which he was better suited, as he went on to show at Man Utd.

RIP Steve.

That's sad news,my first Everton game (v Birmingham, December 1976) was one of Billy Bingham's last,so one of my earliest Everton memories is of Steve Burtenshaw being our caretaker manager. He had a lot of success as a coach with Arsenal. RIP Steve.
I was surprised to read a few weeks ago that Steve was the caretaker manager when we drew at Bolton in the semi final of the league cup to get to the final that year.

Yes,that game and Swindon in the FA cup, though Gordon Lee was in charge for the replay. I always remember the home game with QPR when Steve Burtenshaw was caretaker, mainly because it was my first ever trip up to the top balcony! Sadly though,we lost 3-1.
