Story of a former international

TX Bill

Player Valuation: £80m
Langan's torture - Vincent Hogan - Independent.ie

The guy has obviously been through a lot.

People moan about how much footballers are making these days however I don't begrudge anyone in any line of work for trying to make the most that they can while working. Footballers are no different.

NOW...that being said,

The amounts that footballers are being paid today are exponentially greater than anything that the players of generations before made. I would love to see today's current crop of footballers give more back to the Former Player Associations and other organizations that help former players like the one in the article.

(I still get a bit miffed that Jean-Marc Bosman, the guy who opened the door for players to make millions via today's transfer system, didn't really get anything back from the players he helped enrich by paving the road ahead of them. I believe he spent quite a bit on legal bills and his football career didn't pan out.)

In fact, I'd love to see the next player who has a testimonial give a large portion of his proceeds (assuming it's a highly paid Premier player) to help former players in need.

Would be interesting to see the average wage of a professional footballer over the years.

i'd like to see it in relation to other occupations as well, for example what does a surgeon who saves lives get ? what did he get in say 1984 in relation to a player, the gulf will have widened beyond belief, i know recording artists etc also get paid vast sums and charge a fortune for concerts but i just think it's all made footballers lose sense of reality. i call this the JACKO EFFECT.

When Johnny Haynes became the first £100 a week player I remember a guy on TV saying it will only be a few very talented players who will reap the benifit oops:lol::lol::lol:

Recently, if you just look at the PL, you would also need to separate the really big earners from the rest of the pack because those guys would drive the average up to a point that does not reflect the reality of the average player's salary.

This report from last year says it is £1.1m a year or £21k a week, but it doesn't appear to take into account the above:

Premiership pay average hits £1m | This is Money

So maybe, as a guess, your average type of player would be on, say, 700k a year or £13.5k a week?

Can't be bothered researching the last few years, though

Id love to feel sorry for Ex Pro footballers, but no-ones going to have testimonial dinners and all this crap for me if I went through the same thing.

This guy played week in, week out on injections; played for his country, played in front of thousands of people, got paid to do it. And sure Footballers in the 80's were paupers. Ill believe that when I see it.

There's people a whole lot worse of than this guy. And they didn't put themselves in their situations. Just my opinion...
