See you’re writing this off as if it’s not important but it is, they were mostly all terrible players before their injuries. Injuries didn’t ruin Tosun, he was garbage, that’s why we loaned him out to Crystal Palace where he was also turd before his first major injury. Mina and Delph were injury prone before we bought them. The only big money buy there who genuinely was an unknown quantity and was terrible luck was Gbamin. None of them would’ve made us any money back if they hadn’t picked up injuries.
That just revisionism.
Bolasie wasn’t world class when we bought him, probably not even worth the money we spent on him, but he absolutely was a good PL winger who had pace, could press, and on his day could be very dangerous as he’d shown at Palace. In what way are Everton any better off having him crocked on the bench than either contributing to the team or being sold on even at a lower fee.
Tosun the same, you can say oh he was crap, but in the back end of 17/18 he’d scored goals for us, he then goes on loan to Palace who were prepared to pay a very decent fee if I remember for him. The injury then renders him completely useless for us it’s the difference between you not rating him as player or thinking we over paid, to him being a completely redundant drain on our resources for 5 years, they’re completely different things. It makes the impact of recruitment mistakes from something that can be rescued to something catastrophic.
Gomes exactly the same. He’s not hit the heights of his loan spell once he joined permanently but the injuries destroyed his career here and his value as a player. That can’t just be written off as ‘he was crap anyway’ because he’d had a period of bad form after a period of good form. Even if he didn’t turn the form around we could sell him on for an ok fee to someone who would take a chance on him, no one will take a chance on a player who’s obliterated his ankle and hasn’t got anywhere near his previous level since.
Same with Besic, he doesn’t get crocked and we could have easily sold him on to a lower end PL club if we didn’t want him, after his injury championship clubs wouldn’t even give us a fee for him.
Delph and Mina were never bought for resale purposes. They were bough to improve the team but barely played due to injury.
We could have sold DCL at one point probably for somewhere over 30 mill. Now we wouldn’t get any taker for him.
Injuries just absolutely destroy asset value of our players good or bad. It’s not the sole reason behind our FFP struggles, or even the primary one, but you cannot just discount it.
