Thought this was an interesting comment from Frank Lampard;

Addressing the efforts of Iwobi and Van de Beek in order, Lampard said: “It was hard to pick a man of the match out of those 11 players but, for me, it was Alex.

“The reason was the work ethic he showed, his fitness throughout the game, the way he picked up the positions we wanted off the ball and kept wanting to receive the ball and drive and play.

“He played because he trained so well and that is something I stand behind strongly as a coach.

“Sometimes you pick a team and people outside don’t understand why you pick a player.

“I understand that, too.

“But when someone trains as well as he has [he deserves to play]. All I want is for Alex to have belief and feel the talent he has – I am not sure I expected that 90 minutes of work-rate. He hadn’t played for me... and, wow, I thought he was outstanding.

It could mean a few more eye brow raisers at team news but I'm all for it.

Management is about fitting the right man into the right place for the team. From that comes simple instructions and then confidence (which our players have been sorely lacking). Its not about picking the apparently best players and throwing them together. This is what happened in the 90s England midfield and it never worked. A good team is about balance and confidence.

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve written off Iwobi. I think he always had some talent but his performances on the pitch have been, in the main, poor. Hopefully it’s a case of having the right manager to motivate him and we might see a return on the money we laid out. If Lampard can get performances out of the current squad on a consistent basis then that’s only going to be a good thing in terms of saving us money in certain areas of the pitch. Still think we’ll need a CB and a quality CM in the summer.

No one is going to complain if players perform like Iwobi did. Now the next step is becoming more consistent. He set a standard on Saturday that shows he's capable.

We have a little bit more competition in a few areas now and that's been lacking for a long time.

With hindsight it seems both Ancelotti and Benitez had identified the players they wanted to work with and sidelined certain others in the expectation that they would bring in their own players. The situation Lampard has come into means he’s going to have to get the best out of what he has until the end of the season and hopefully he will achieve that. Trying to maximise the potential of the current squad and adding one or two quality players seems a much more sustainable way of doing things for a team like Everton. Even though we have a wealthy owner we aren’t in a position to spend £200million in one window without an absolute fire sale.

Yeah I think both those managers were quite set on who they wanted to select. I'm not going to go overboard on one game because we've seen these players show promise and then regress before. But we'll see how this pans out.

The squad has lots of flaws but I have no doubt they were underachieving under Benitez. They are a midtable set of players in my view, and absolutely not a relegation squad. Unfortunately we are where we are in the league, and only a decent run of results will restore confidence.

Yeah I think around 10th should be about par for this lot, with a tilt at top 7 in a good year. Definitely too early to get excited about the likes of Iwobi but if Lampard can get consistent performances out of some of our underachievers then I’ll be delighted.

It's interesting to partner those comments with those of Benitez - when he said that players who had been showing their ability in training then let him down on the pitch - and consider the connotations of that difference so far.
