Not at all. I'm showing that there are people out there doing some great things and those people have very little to do with the government. I'm sorry if I'm not as pessimistic about things as you are.
I know what your doing and its got nothing to do with extolling the virtues of self help and a caring society.

That's all well and good to sit there and call it a disgrace though mate. Did you actually look inside the place? Whilst not the Heygate, I lived in the Aylsbury estate when I first moved to London, and it's practically identical. It was a horrible place to live, absolutely horrible.

I mean I dare say, despite this supposed mass migration of people, Southwark is still infinitely more diverse than Kensington. Where are the affordable houses in your own neck of the woods? Would you have wanted the Heygate in its old form dumped in the middle of your borough?

I was referring to the decision to sell the land at a loss to Lend Lease who in contrast to the Community Land Trust made almost no provision for affordable housing, and secondly that recommendations for refurbishment rather than redevelopment were completely ignored.

These are policy decisions which do not act in the interests of the former residents and any remaining residents either in the short term or long term. They are purely motivated by short term financial considerations and the desire to gentrify local Boroughs.

This is also true of RBKC where the policy is to reduce building of social housing in favour of properties for "middle" income earners - the view being that only the (in their words) "very rich" or "very poor" can live in the Borough.

I don't believe in climate change either lid, I mean I know I have the overwhelming majority of scientists telling me otherwise, but it's all cock and bull I mean floods have been going back to the time of Noah ent dey and we didn't have factories back then!

climate change lol

Nothing to do with research grants ....... No siree.

It's my job to find/understand interesting ways of tackling problems, and I enjoy very much sharing the wonderful things that people are working on around the world. If you think there's anything deeper to it than that then I'm afraid your mistaken.

I don't often agree with you Nick but you're spot on here.

Nobody convicted of murder should ever be allowed into this country.

They have every right to be at the moment, because of the EU. We are powerless.

And now a British girl has likely been murdered because of it, not to mention the thousands of other people who have been victims of foreign crime due to the lack of checks.

I will take your word. Sorry if I was mistaken.

well he was and it's a whole cluster fuk which ended with a life being taken! The point I was making is, using this justify your views is a low blow as is LOL comments attached to this matter.

Oh pipe down you. The lol was at our joke of a country allowing this to happen.

This is EXACTLY why I have the views I have and EXACTLY why I will justify them.

I'm sure the structure was sound in the sense that it wouldn't fall down, but the properties were an awfully long way from being nice to live in, and that's before any kind of eco friendliness and so on is considered. I mean the demolition has taken longer than expected because of the amount of asbestos in the building. I'm not sure how feasible it would be to redevelop such an arcane structure without requiring the residents to move out.

As for the gentrification thing, again, it's damned if you do, damned if you don't. I can't recall many positive comments down the years about high streets that are full of poundlands, betting shops and pay day loan vendors, yet they tend to dominate Walworth road.

I've no doubt the council probably did sell the land for less than it was worth, and there quite possibly was some under the table dealings involved. That's politics though isn't it? I'm not sure how we can advocate more government when what we do have doesn't appear to be all that highly recommended (and we're talking Labour and Lib Dem councils here so it can't be a bash the Tories thing, especially as the deal was done under the Labour government).
