I read today that thus far around $1 billion has been donated to the two presidential candidates. When you consider the vast sums also donated to the failed primary candidates and this whole eletion must have cost around $2 billion thus far.

In a time of economic hardship for so many, how can this be justified, especially considering much of this will be wasted on tv ads where one candidate bad mouths the other.
 
It cant. But there are many many things that cannot be justified regards to money and who has it and what they do with it so the people with the money are still going to do what they want with it.

And if that means donating to their favourite polictical party while a family down the street struggle to keep a roof over their house don't expect them to care one bit.

It seems that there might be a case for capping the amount spent by any one candidate. That, or perhaps allow candidates X amount of dollars from the public purse. Either way, $2b seems like an awful lot of to me, particularly as much of the media campaign is fought on soundbites and spin.
