... the 1936/1937 season, when we finished 17th and they finished 18th, and the 1935/1936 season, when we finished 16th and they finished 19th (in a 22 team division, they stayed up on goal difference).

So if we finished above them for the second season in a row this season, it would be the first time that has happened for 76 years. Quite the incentive, wouldn't you say?

The above excludes the times when we were in Division 1 and they were in Division 2 (1893/1894, 1895/1896, 1904/1905, and 1954 to 1962).

List of Seasons when we finished above Liverpool (only including seasons where we've been in the same division as them, consecutive seasons finishing above them in bold):

2011/2012 - EFC 7th, LFC 8th
2004/2005 - EFC 4th, LFC 5th
1986/1987 - EFC Champions, LFC 2nd
1984/1985 - EFC Champions, LFC 2nd
1969/1970 - EFC Champions, LFC 5th
1964/1965 - EFC 4th, LFC 7th
1962/1963 - EFC Champions, LFC 8th
1938/1939 - EFC Champions, LFC 11th

1936/1937 - EFC 17th, LFC 18th
1935/1936 - EFC 16th, LFC 19th

1933/1934 - EFC 14th, LFC 18th
1932/1933 - EFC 11th, LFC 14th
1931/1932 - EFC Champions, LFC 10th

1913/1914 - EFC 15th, LFC 16th
1912/1913 - EFC 11th, LFC 12th
1911/1912 - EFC 2nd, LFC 17th
1910/1911 - EFC 4th, LFC 13th

1908/1909 - EFC 2nd, LFC 16th
1906/1907 - EFC 3rd, LFC 15th
1903/1904 - EFC 3rd, LFC 17th & Relegated
1901/1902 - EFC 2nd, LFC 11th
1897/1898 - EFC 4th, LFC 9th
1894/1895 - EFC 2nd, LFC 16th & Relegated

On the seasons when we've been in the same division as them, we've finished above them 26 times.

This post was inspired by someone earlier who posted that there was nothing riding on the derby, and that the season was as good as over. Just thought people might be interested in the above.:P

Foxy got his ticket, programme and a foot long hot dog and still had enough change from a shilling to catch the tram home.

Crikey! So post-war we've only finished above them 7 times in almost 60 seasons we've competed against each other. And Moyes has done 2, possibly 3, of them.

Puts another perspective on the received wisdom that Moyes is ineffective against Liverpool (which he often is in the games themselves, to be fair).

7 times in the last 70 years...that is crazy. Just goes to show how dominating they were during their boot-room era. Before my time, but they finished in the top 3 an awful lot during the 60's, 70' & 80's. Not much different to how Man Utd have been in the Prem-era.

Definitely have to finish above them this season! It's high time we begin balancing the books...

I don't know about anyone else, but I consider being in the top division while they are in the one below as "finishing above them."

Well, in the pursuit of accuracy, I should really point out that finishing above them is as much a function of their own performance than ours over the course of a season. Last season's achievement being all the more remarkable given they took 6 points off us.

Of those seven times, the fact that four times we won the league kind of shows how high the bar was raised from the 60s onwards.

Not over yet but I agree with Brennan. Also it adds one more moan to their ever growing list for when they eventually turn on their messiah!

That's the point I was going to make. Also highlights just how high the hurdle is to begin balancing the books. It has taken Arab billions to help City start to compete with their red neighbours

I think, for the sake of balance. You HAVE to include the season they were in the lowere leagues.

If you dont, it just sounds pathetic. Especially as we where consudered the bigger club, pre 1960's.
