Trouble flared at Old Trafford on Saturday night as more than 50 police officers were required to control a surge against them by Everton fans in the wake of Darren Fletcher's first-half goal.

The atmosphere had been tense from kick-off as Everton fans targeted Manchester United's Wayne Rooney without mercy. The abuse became particularly vicious as a small band chanted "Die, Kai Rooney", in reference to the forward's newborn son.

Everton have an ugly record in this area, having subjected Liverpool's Steven Gerrard to similarly disgraceful chants last season after the birth of his child.

Rooney's every touch had drawn derision, as tends to happen when he plays in front of the Everton supporters, and the tipping point came when Fletcher put United ahead after 34 minutes.

Several officers who waded in to calm the unrest received rough treatment and the away contingent were penned in with a tight police cordon for the remainder of the game.

Pretty sad if true. It's only a game.

we could easily become the number one target for the press, they will be wheeling out the liars fantasy soon.
so easily we could be labelled the worst that there are, there are always incidents and most are found funny by the rest, just liddish behaviour usually.

I have to say I like Rooney and would have him back in a shot.
The actions of such a young lad at the time are long forgotten for me, and can't blame any player for joining United to be honest.
Best player in the league when on form.

The original article said we'd sung Die Kai Rooney.

It's been taken down because it's not true (I hope)

This 100%

However it does put him off his game

 Glad our fans were only wishing death on a grown man then rather than a child. That makes it so much better. Can the famous scouse humour not come up with anything better than that?

fat little knob'ead,
you're just a fat little knob'ead !!

was the main one he got.

the baby's not yours got a few outings, quickly followed up by "it's adebayors" followed by "it's so feckin ugly.....that baby is yours"

the shipman song got a few outings.

as nev has pointed out, all the usuals came out from their end as well, "feed the scousers" etc. to me thats football banter, people at games don't bat an eyelid, it's part of football and they don't really want that to change. it seems to me that a big stink is made cos it's heard on the box.

the accusation that was levelled about wishing his kid was dead though is like a hibbo 40 yarder.

This. Never was it Kai Rooney. And it is part of football banter as far as i'm concerned to. The only song which was well out of order saturday was the song that the minority sung about Munich - that was well out.

Still find it funny how all the United fans sing about how much they hate scousers yet there best player is Rooney. They were singing 'feed the scousers', Rooney hits the bar then the whole ground....'Rooney Rooney Rooney'. Wonder how Wayne feels when he hears such songs??
