Sharpys top lip

Player Valuation: £60m
I was watching last nights Under '21 game. An what i couldn't belive was their wasn't one player in the starting line up from the supposed top 4.

Joe Hart Steven Taylor Martin Cranie Andrew Taylor

Tom Huddlestone Fabrice Muamba *
ss-stat-yellow.gif
James Milner Mark Noble Adam Johnson ** Gabriel Agbonlahor *** Michael Mancienne

Substitutes
Tom Heaton Richard Stearman Jamie O'Hara Lee Cattermole (56) *
ss-stat-yellow.gif
Michael Kightly (86) ** Fraizer Campbell (76) *** Aaron Lennon

Now this just can't be right. Yes Fraizer Campbell came on in the end, but thats it. Why would any promising kids go to these clubs. Just look at the R/S the last two decent payers they produced were Gerrars an carra. who are 28,30 years old. Utd havnt produced any one since the golden age. Arsenal an chelsea just seem to buy their kids in.

Is their no wonder then, that england are being left behind as a nation in world football. The problam is are top kids have no experience in champions leagus against the top teams an players in the world. So it's only just going to get worse.

Whats the answer?....

Do we need a Transfer cap of about, say £30m per season. Or would it be better to have at least 4 English players in the starting eleven?. What do you think? This just can't carry on like this any more. Were bringing top European Kids in an bringing them through. We need to be doing this for are own kids.

It isn't that hard to figure out actually. Liverpool and ManU came into the top of Europe with a golden age or some great players from their own academies, but to stay there they can't trust their own academies.. they have to buy players to stay there. And with the money they get, they can do that. Chelsea is another story, they've bought their way into the top.. much like ManC are in the process of doing with their new investors.

A youngster from ManU, Pool, Chelsea or Arsenal MUST be exceptional to take a spot in their teams, so it's no wonder that most youngsters in the younger national teams come from lower positioned teams. In those teams they have an easier time to take a starting slot or at least get subbed in more often. I'm sure that there are some very, very good talent in the top 4 as well.. but they don't get as much playing time and therefore they won't be called up to the national teams since they don't play regularly or even close to regularly for their clubs, except perhaps in reserve games.

I agree with you that this will most likely penalise England in the long run, but as a Swede.. I don't care that much.. :P(y)

That there's the answer isn't it? Even playing abroad earns players an extraordinary wage, yet too few are willing to break out of their comfort zone to get to the very top. Foreign players are prepared to do what it takes to succeed. Our players won't.

If the English kids are good enough they'll play. At the moment that doesn't seem to be the case which points to our acadamies more than anything and how we develop them. Technically we are way behind compared to other countries in my opinion.

I don't agree with having 4 English players in each side, it's unfair in my opinion. You should be in the team on merit, not on where you come from.

Vaughan would be if he could get fit and stay fit.

Rodwell will probably get in this year I reckon. I thought he played really well against Portsmouth.

I agree hes better then Agbonlahor if you ask me, Rodwell has a lot of adding to be done to his game from a midfiled perspective especialy tracking back and noticing runs from a midfield defensive perspective however that will come with expierence, hes definitely going to make it!

Intrestingly mate our friend at Wolves Kightly has had a fantastic start to the season.

Don't know what the answer is but this argument has been going on in Spain and Italy for a long time now.
Fact is, witha few notable exceptions like Ardiles, Villa, Thyssen, Muhren and a few others, We didn't buy many foreign players in the past. It's only the emergence of the PL as the richest league in the world which has brought the amount of top class, big name foreign stars to our shores.
I can speak more about Spain than Italy for obvious reasons and the recent success of the national team in the Euros should be taken note of by the authorities in the PL. The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona continually produce fine young players from their youth systems. Sevilla is another example of a first class production line. Maybe it's because they've been importing players for so long they've adapted to the circumstances. Italy always have a competitive national team despite the presence of numerous international stars. It does reach a point where if a league becomes extremely affluent, it's possibly cheaper to buy a player from abroad than bring one through the ranks.
The fact is, you can't always find a Giggs, beckham, Scholes, Rooney, Gerrard or Terry in your ranks. and it costs the same to bring through a Fletcher, Neville or Hibbert, and they're far more common.

I just don't rate Agbonlahor to be honest, he's decent but nothing special. Vaughan is the real deal for me, it's just about getting him fit and in then right condition.

I agree on Rodwell, he needs to learn to hold his position. At the moment he makes a pass and runs forward into space. He shouldn't be doing that, he should make a pass and hold his position. As a defensive midfielder that's his job at the moment.

With time though that will come, he's only been playing centre midfield for a year so he's got lots of time. You can't fault his ability on the ball, he looked very composed against Portsmouth and at times sprayed the ball about and made some intelligent passes.
