This is an absolute classic.

The following is the transcript of an ACTUAL radio conversation in October 1995, between a US Navy ship off the coast of England, and the British authorities.

The transcript was released by the Ministry of Defence on 10/10/95.

BRITS: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South, to avoid a collision.

AMERICANS: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the North, to avoid a collision.

BRITS: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

AMERICANS: This is the Captain of US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

BRITS: Negative. I say again. You will have to divert your course.

AMERICANS: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN. THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS ACCOMPANY US. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. THAT'S 15 DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

wait for it

BRITS: We are a lighthouse. F* * k off

Except it isn't real. It is a good laugh though.

As you have someone from the Navy here, we actually play by the maritime rules quite well. We never demand from other mariners unless we are actually engaged in an operation. We obey all the rules of the road as concerning the stand-on vessel and the giveway vessel, it is actually part of my job, all this navigation malarkey.

I'm sure Snopes could have dispelled it pretty quickly.

Now, I wouldn't have been surprised if that was a conversation between a lighthouse and Capt. Joseph Hazelwood....

umm. nope, I do actually remember this being released, it was the week I joined up.

The final remark was slightly less abrupt but the rest, as I recall was pretty accurate (it tends to surface every year or so on MoD email, I think the RN rerelease it every anniversary:D)

oh.. and it wasn't actually the Brits, was the Irish, hence the Captain being given enough rope before he was fully informed ;)
