To Coach or to Not Coach...

Player Valuation: £70m
That is the question. Managers buy players during the close season, they have youth players that they can bring through, so why do managers like Benitez and Allardyce seem unable to work with what they have to get results?

I bet Benitez couldn't wait to get to the transfer window so he could start spending again, and as for Newcastle well chucking money at a problem is always the wrong solution for them.

Seems history teaches them nothing.

Allardyce clearly can't coach, how fortunate we are he never ended up as England manager.

I guess the question is, how much can the technique of a mature player be improved by coaching, and how much is on tactical organisation and fitness. I'd suggest that when you get senior players, the latter can be coached whilst the former can't and so if you have poor players technically then they probably won't improve that much.

Now of course, there can't be many players in the Liverpool squad that Benithez didn't sign himself so quite what his excuse can be I don't know.

Well how many quality Newcastle players can you say have come through the books since the days of:

Gazza and Waddle?

Steven Taylor, Steve Watson, not many really.

Quite possibly the worse coaching club in the country.

Robert was signed for nearly 11 million and that was 6 years back. Stupid they are Newcastle, I reckon they just sign players and pick them, and that's it. No development or nothing. I believe that every player regardless of age can improve parts of his game. Be it tactics, technique, mental attitude, fitness.

Newcastle and Liverpool seem to think that throwing money at an issue is enough resolve. Man City are doing the same thing in a way.

rob lee was alright, a better footballer than limo driver. and didnt toon have shearer on the books as a kid?

buying foreign players is always something of a risk, there are no guarantees they will fit in with british culture (how many have complained at the booze and getting legless?) british food certainly doesnt appease their lofty tastes and as for the weather, its hardly St tropez.

Shearer came through the Southampton setup.

British food can hardly be a valid complaint when you can get foreign food everywhere.

But I know what you mean.

Also take a look at Big Sam and Little Sam. As a duo were very impressive, apart and they both look [Poor language removed]. Big Sam can see a bargain and can negotiate a deal, where as Little Sam can coach at grassroots. Sometimes you have to accept your shortfalls, Big Sam is not a coach and therefore is not going to be successful unless he gets a coach who is willing to develop players.

But then without wanting to get bogged down with Newcastle's problems, they do seem to go for the short term and not the long term. Whereas we are definitely going long term and we are now starting to see those benefits.

Strange that Billy Davies was sacked for being ahead of schedule in Derby's long term plan. I suppose we should be thankful to BK on that score.

There have been plenty of players from that area but hardly ever have come through the Newcastle ranks. Strange really as when John Hall took over the club he planned to setup a sporting club similar to Barca with various teams all playing under the Newcastle umbrella, and they invested quite a bit in youth facilities. I suspect the fans are partly to blame as they want instant results all the time. With the lack of competition in their catchment area it really is quite criminal that they don't have a host of top young players available.

shearer got played in goal by toon before he got a scholarship* at saints, he was only eleven or twelve at the time, if i recall correctly.

Spurs are just as bad. They signed Chimbonda for big bucks last season, Gunter has been signed and now they appear to be on the verge of signing Hutton from Rangers. How many right backs do they need?
