When I was last at Goodison, some old dear behind me said 'oh Tom, if only you could do the simple things right' after he misplaced a 5 yard pass horribly after getting a little pressure from his opposite number.
He needs to protect the ball much better throughout the game (same could be said for a lot of our players btw).
There was a moment last night, towards the dying minutes, where he was surrounded and rather than give the ball away, in what would've been a risky area, he scooped it out of play and let us regroup...more of that sensible play needed
I'd like to see him work with Cahill - I think his play would benefit from a lot of what made Cahill good.
He could also do with having a word with Kilbane. I've never seen an Everton player win as many free kicks in my life as him. If anyone went near him he'd get a free kick off a ref. Incredible.

Did alright again yesterday, him and Gomes are alright squad players provided one of Allan and Doucoure plays. Not expecting miracles from him but he’s been useful this season. If we get Europe we’re going to need squad players like him who can come in and do a job. I really don’t see what people expect a 5th choice cm to be like for a team not in Europe
Sorry mate, but I think Davies and Gomes were pretty awful yesterday. Their job was to get the ball, to steal the ball, to stop their midfielders from having game, and to move the ball across the mid. In my opinion, they failed terribly at doing this. If they got the ball and had more possession then players like James, Richarlison, Digne and DCL can have more participation. In a game like this one, you can see how important it is to have at least one player like Doucouré or Allan on the field.

Edit: I read your post too quickly. I agree with most of what you said except the part that he was alright yesterday. Sorry.

Upon reflection, I can see why people think Davies had a good game. He tracked his runners and generally retained possession. The problem is how we just said to Leicester you're better than us we will try our best to cling on.

Davies and Gomes couldn't compete with their midfield so we just defended with everything we had. That's not good enough going forward. Eventually you start to lose games like last night comfortably. To have DCL and James in your team and give them so little is criminal.

Davies is no world beater, never will be, but words fail me looking at the pure hate in this thread, what does anyone in the world expect an engine room of Gomez and Davies to produce? Especially against a well drilled, quick, team like Leicester. Some in here with the biggest gobs have obvs
never kicked a ball in their lives

I agree with you mate, I don’t think Davies and Gomes have ever worked well together. I didn’t wanna blame either too much because everyone knows they need somebody with the legs to get around the pitch and close down and keep things ticking over, and there was no-one on the bench to provide that either.
As sexy as James is I think him playing centrally just meant there was acres of room in midfield where Ndidi and then Mendy were at times, as well as Digne not been able to ever tuck in due to Castagne.
Hopefully we never have to endure a Davies/Gomes combo again especially in a big game, they’re just really not suited to playing with each other at all, and it went about as well as I hoped tbh in terms of limiting them, but showed last season it’s a non-entity in midfield.

Everyone defended though, Richarlison spent most the game back tracking and putting in tackles, digne found himself basically playing as a left wing back 2nd half, the whole team sat back

Who actually knows what there jobs were? It’s easy to say what we think they should be doing but it’s the managers instructions which they follow and unless we have an inside man we won’t know. I doubt Tom and Andre had the same instructions, as most players now have individual roles despite playing in the same position (CM in this situation)

Yes they did and I think the main reason is how poor we were in central midfield. It's such an important part of the pitch for control of the game and we knew we couldn't match them.

I'm really not sure what point you're trying to make here? You don't think he's good enough to be able to impact the game against a supposed rival, but you're unhappy that other people are complaining that he didn't impact a game against a supposed rival? You think people should just accept players being crap and not mention it? Interesting take.

I've said it before - he is fine, but fine is not good enough when you want to be a top 4 club. I like the guy, he has a crack, but he will never be the type of player, starter or squad, that will help us become a perm top 4 team.
