there's a fair amount of players on that list with no national appearances.... so i'd think this is more about what to expect this year rather than based on years past. :pint:

and i said this in the sir donovan thread, but i think donovan's only on there as a bone thrown to US fans. although i will say the dude has 42 goals in internationals, which is more than many of the other mids & strikers listed.

After Pienaar setting the confederations cup alight, I'd have expected him to be in that list, especially as he plays for Africa.

haha i just got in an argument with a friend of a friend on facebook about Cahill's absence from the list. He said that Cahill wouldn't make the EPL top 50 list, much less the World Cup list, too bad I can't strangle someone through the computer screen...

also personally i think messi at number 1 is a joke, completely unproven at the international level thus far imho.

Good point, and one I agree with. Messi gets heaps of credit for what he does at the club level. I do think he's one of the best, but it's easy to be great when your supporting cast is the best in the world. Argentina's team isn't a slouch, yet he doesn't seem to have the same success. I'm no detective, but.....

These lists are just for fun though. I don't think I've ever heard of a list that everyone agreed with and no one had problems with.

I love this quote:

Lionel Messi is the best pound-for-pound soccer player in the world, and perhaps of all time

I would love to have a go at this article but its just too easy. There is no rhyme or reason the the article. Does it go by club performances or International performances.

Klose doesn't even start for Bayern. Gerrard and Messi have been terrible internationally. Eto is on his last legs but ranked ahead of Maicon and Schnijder. If I'm not mistaken Lahm has been on the verge of getting benched due to being such a defensive liability.

Terry is 37th, nuff said. I could probably name 36 Centerbacks that are better than him.

Gerrard should be nowhere near the top 10...

Schweinsteiger, Pienaar, Cahill, Howard (didn't he get the Best Keeper award at the Confeds?!), JS Park, Robinho, Di Maria, Oscar Cardoso and Mesut Ozil could all have had a mention...

Indeed, and the calibre of the rest of the top ten just make it even more obvious.

As for Messi, he probably is the best player in the world (has anyone seen his free kick just now vs Almeria, for instance?), its just as a team Argentina are nowhere near as good as Barcelona are, both in terms of the players available and (more importantly) the standard of management.

That doesn't really hold up as you see Henry at number 28 and Gerrard ahead of the likes of Fabregas. If that was the idea, it's well off the mark. Possibly trying to combine a bit of both ideas. ie. players who've done it all on the world stage and those who can potentially be big stars. Seems to fall between two stools in that respect. But Hell, subjective lists are always going to get an argument. That's part of the fun.

In fairness, what's not to say that someone that has done it before can do it again? (i.e. you could have been great in the past, and still be someone to "watch". Conversely, you could be new to the international stage, and be expected to make a "splash".)

I think it goes without saying that holds true for both. :pint:

Plus it's just an opinion piece by one guy. I think people take these things too seriously.

Good post.

Ones to watch usually mean lesser known players who might surprise people. That list is just a who's who of football through a straw stars.

Laziest journo at it's best/worst.

Like I said. Lists are fun. Though I can't see Henry making much of a splash unless it's with his hand:D
