Soccer lifts Crew's Iro from hard life

Iro, 25 and in his third season with the Crew, spent his late teens peddling milk and bread, cigarettes and soda.

From ages 17 to 19, Iro was founder, owner and operator of a neighborhood grocery store in his hometown of Liverpool, England.

Iro was named the Big West Defender of the Year three consecutive times. In 2006, his junior season, UC Santa Barbara was named the No. 2 party school in the nation by Playboy magazine. Iro took little notice. He was helping the Gauchos win a national title.

Iro's good and getting better all the time. Problem is his game improves most - meaning he learns the little things- when he's paired with Chad Marshall, but Iro's #3 CB on the squad and when Marshall and Eric Brunner are both healthy they start and Brunner gets the benefit.

- And by the way, sounds like his Mum is one helluva woman!
Her kids seem to make the best out of opportunity.
