I think Mertens and Shaqiri where more than media speculation. I don't think we necessarily got to the stage of bidding for both but I do think we where interested.

Wijnaldum and Ospina ironically I do think are media speculation at this point but who knows.

I'm not in a huff. Mertens would have been good but there's nothing we can do if he doesn't want to leave Napoli and Shaqiri on reflection probably isn't what we need.

The one player I really do wish we had of went for is Denis Cheryshev. His goals/assists per mins is only bettered by the likes of Messi and Ronaldo and he plays on the left. But he's either staying at Valencia or playing at Real.

Villarreal you mean?

If we do sign him that means that Cleverley would be playing behind the striker. I imagine that means more emphasis on getting the ball out wide to Deulofeu and Baines. Cut backs aplenty but a bit one dimensional perhaps.
Cleverly will be on the left against teams we look to dominate and he will go with two fast wingers against the top teams. The reality is we need Lennon for cover but a play maker isn't the priority. We need a proven CB before anything else.

I'd actually say he'll do the exact opposite with Cleverley. Also I think a solid stop gap with experience would do at centre back, playmaker more important for me.

Playing for Wigan doesn't make you a bad player. Just because a player has played for Wigan it should not preclude them from playing for Everton.
Yes, Robles , Kone were signed from Wigan , but where did Wigan sign them from.
If anything it shows that RM favours the league of his native Spain.

A bit pedantic I know, but Barry and Lukaku, Henen and Galloway have not played for Wigan.

Three points:
  • It's fine to play for Wigan (Leighton Baines did!). I was pointing out that Martinez signs players from his old club often enough that saying he has a great knowledge of the European leagues is daft.
  • We haven't just signed Robles and Kone from Wigan. We've also signed McCarthy and Alcaraz. And Cleverley played for them under Martinez (that's half of a relegated team).
  • Barry and Lukaku fall into the >2 Merlin Sticker Books part of the Martinez transfer formula. I'll give you Henen and Galloway I suppose, but both were youth signings (you cheeky pedant!).

Cleverly has played on the left doing exactly the job Pienaar does. Mirallas, Deulofeu and Lennon are far too direct to play that role for a Martinez team. Deulofeu could do it. He has the ability but I don't think he has the tactial intelligence to do it, someone to drop deep and be another man in midfield to link up. It will be Cleverly unless we buy someone better.

More likely 4-3-3 with McCarthy behind Wijnaldum and Barkley.
