I think it depends on the subject. Unfortunately most degrees don't give you much extra other than debt and 3 years to think about what you want to do.

Yeah agreed mate, can be useful to fill up a void while thinking about what career you want though.

Its rare graduates actually enter a career which is specific/relevant to their degree.

I'm a second year student and I'm one of the lucky ones who hopefully will enter a job straight away as I'm studying medicine.
Some of my mates however are finishing degrees this year and going on to masters because they still haven't decided what to do. Still, fair play to them. Education is important and if you enjoy it, why not?

A good degree at a good university is always worth it. Education is very important so learning the academic way is great. Of course there is also much to be learnt through experience and tacit knowledge is often overlooked.

So go to uni to learn stuff. If you're going to be a pisshead for three years then whats the point? Ask yourself if they took away the qualification, would you still go purely for the knowledge you'd gain? If you wouldn't then it's probably not worth the time and money.

My old man works at a University, though not on the academic side. Just in the H&S team. He does say though that the amount of students taking sociology or psychology is ridiculous and its common knowledge many will struggle to break into the career they want after graduation.

I still think going to University is worthwhile, but any prospective student needs to give it real thought. Its no longer a case where a decent job awaits you when you have completed your studies and some degrees are worth more than others.

1 in 3 drop out.

3 in 3 do [Poor language removed] all.

I'm glad im not going.

if you have the chance and the aptitude to go, then go.

study a worthwhile subject, not the 'new aged' hippy courses like aromatherapy and other such nonsense.

The best course you can do, at least for using the mind, is philosophy. It's a lot of hard work, since you can't really get by by rote, but well worth the effort.

The best thing I EVER did was go to University. I came away with not only a good degree but the life experience is worth it alone. For Cal to say hes glad he didnt go just smacks of a bit of ignorance really no offence mate. If you went and then dropped out fair play but to say you're glad you didnt go is a bit silly.

My degree has elements of event management and I am now an event manager. Other people I went to uni with who did the same practical media and event management have got the following jobs:

BBC natural history camera man
Video production and editting for TV adverts
Virgin Music PR
TV producer
Creative designer for magazines.
